it stops doing anything, the pointer/cursor dissapears and I can't do a thing, can't close the page, open a nother page, open a folder...nothing, zip, nada.
what causes this freeze and what can I do about it, if anything?
I can't tell you anything about the computer or the service, I have no idea what the specs are on this machine, its a Dell laptop E1705 says insiron and Windows XP on the stickers.
sounds like either corrupted files in the operating system or a Virus. Could also be bad or loose ram and a defective hard drive. A trip to a repair shop should get you the exact cause and repair estimate.
May be a Win32/Virut infection, if it is, don't bother spending anytime trying to clean that virus out, the only cure is a re-format and a clean install.
i'd bet you're systems chock full of spyware and malware programs, they eat up all your memory and cpu resources get ya self a copy of of some spyware remover software.
All of the above...
I had this same problem on my desk pc and I was fortunate enough to have a spare hard drive with XP sp2 and just put it in my tower. I then was able to hook the other drive up, transfer my files, and then format that drive.
I'm on a 5 year old laptop that my stepdaughter gave me now. She had problems with this one and I was able to "clean" it up and it works great sitting in a recliner!
it keeps recurring, even after they wiped the thing clean , took off everything and we've started from scratch now twice, and its back....locks up, nothing works.
I've decided it's like my dodge qc, best way to fix a dodge is trade it for a Ford .
I agree on the Mac! That is what my stepdaughter finally bought after giving me this HP Laptop I'm on. She first bought a newer HP and it started freezing up on her within 2 days. She took it back to Best Buy and then forked over the money for a small Mac machine which she said was about 500 bucks more than she wanted to pay for a computer.
BUT...she states it's the best 500 bucks extra she has ever spent for a small laptop.
I'm pretty sure that if I ever buy a new laptop...it will be a Mac.
Meanwhile, have you tried to clean the machine? Heat could also be the cause.
