I have been trying, for days, to get the laptop I just bought configured how I want it. I have hit problem after problem with the total junk operating system they put on it. Microsoft XP may well be good for the computer user who does nothing but use the computer, but for the guy who wishes to remove programs, configure others to how they want it, and move things to and from the windows directory this operating system is the worst yet.
I looked into the drivers and other nice essential pieces of software and noticed the code line insisting on the XP environment - So I can't even downgrade to Windows 98, which is MUCH more stable than this supposedly stable platform.
This is more of a rant, than an search for answers, but if anyone does have any for me, I welcome them. I want to be able to configure the computer to accept different software, particularly a much improved version of Notepad*****, that allows multiple windows, etc... and a couple of custom dictionaries that write to some system files. Windows XP will not let me load them - it deletes them, or moves them.. I cannot get rid of the worthless microsoft notepad, it keeps reinstalling it every time I delete it.. GRRRRRR
This is the worst system I have ever encountered - why is it that Microsoft insist on controlling everything, and making computers Worse??
Microsoft believes no one can think for themselves, and they must make the simplest operating system possible. I could not agree with you more, when i got my new computer with Windows XP, the first thing I did was remove it and install Windows 98 and Linux.
I would look for the drivers on the internet for other platforms, usually they have them.
Can't say I really agree with you - I've been using computers nonstop since I was 10 (I'm 21 now) and I like XP a lot. However, I have found that if there's any inconsistencies in your hardware, XP can make your life miserable. My computer was built by Alienware and all the components work 100% with each other, so I haven't had any problems.
I like XP because it gives you the ability to pretty much tailor the whole thing to your liking.
This is just socialism. They know what is best for you and how you should live your life. If you try to resist they will be at your front door to take you away to a re-education camp.
I'm with BigMatt...I work on these things all day and I've never experienced a problem with XP...it's far more stable that 98, 98SE and certainly ME. Sorry you're havin' problems over there chief but hardware conflicts are most likely the cause of your failure...I'm running a Dell laptop, eMachines desktop and Dell desktops in my office...all with no problems. Good luck bro!!
Hmm, thats too bad that you are having touble. XP has been the most stable OS I have used on my machines. I have used everything from 98SE to XP Pro. I like XP the best. I would never go back.
Join us, Theo....you know you want to.......come to our side........... it's a happy place, a world without sorrow or blue screens of death........ a world without errors or frozen programs............ you'll happy here.........
I find that Windows XP is the best and easiest Windows ever. I have used everything from DOS to Win3.1 to Windows 95, 98 and now Windows XP. I believe that it totally rocks! Sorry about your luck Theo. Now that you have all this time off you should design your own operating system. You can call it "Mastersoft Theo XP". HEHE!
Interesting responses guys.. I wish I had the lack of problems you seem to have. This brand new Dell laptop has not been online yet, but has hung 5 times in 25 hours of operation. That does not seem very stable to me. I will keep plugging on, and see if I can't manage to win this battle.
Theo
XP doesn't like to be fiddled with and I feel your pain.
It took some doin to get some "alternate programs"(like a dos version of Norton Commander cira 1984) to run.
please don't ask how , I just kept messing around till they started running.
My XP on a emachine has been very stable, except when I try to make it work my way.
I have to agree with the majority here and say that XP is the best operating system I've ever used. I started with Win95 and upgraded my 1st dinosaur puter to Win98, which was a pretty easy to learn and use system. Problem was that it constantly wanted to lock up or give me the blue screen of death.
I'm now using a Dell that came with XP on it. I love it! I have never locked up and never been blue screened. I admit that my puter is more of a toy than a work horse, but it is so simple to use that I can't understand why anyone would want to go to Linux or anything else. I don't even know what Linux is, so there is the possibility that it's pretty cool and easy to use. But going into DOS and messing around with files or other operating system features is taking your investment into your own hands and likely to cause troubles. But, to each his own I guess.
I am pretty sure that the more you get to know XP the more you will like it. I subscribe to a weekly XP newsletter that has been really great about teaching you the finer points of using XP. If you are interested in subscribing --- and its free --- follow the link below. Sorry you are having such problems with your XP, but I think different makes of machines react differently. Our puter at work, a Gateway..( Mooooo ).. has had numerous difficulties, but that may be due to a number if different users, some of which are not very computer savvy.

Linux is a great operating system, far supieror to windows, and it's free too! It's not incredibily hard to pick up either, I've been using redhat for a few years now.
