More e40d issues

My truck is a 96 PSD with a e4od trans with 312k miles on it. The trans has been rebuilt by the previous owner. When I first take off it's great, but after about 20 min. of driving the 1st. to 2nd. shift point changes. It will either shift like it's a new transmission or it runs it out to like 3200 and then I still need to let off for it to shift. The fluid and filter were just changed about 1500 miles ago. I was starting to see this prior to the service and it went away but now it's back. The OD light doesn't blink and I have no CEL. Please help me.

What are the chances of it being the front pump? When I changed the fluid I unhooked the return line and started the truck and the fluid seemed to slowly flow out.

Also what are the symptoms of a shift solenoid going bad? I've read that they are problematic.

Welcome to

You might try cleaning the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in the rear differential. Don't use any cleaner or anything like that, just remove it, wipe it off with a cloth and reinstall it. Sometimes the metal shavings accumulate on the magnetic pickup and interfere with the signal. If there's any question about how old the VSS is, replace so you know you have good one.

Thank you for the response. I changed that sensor the day I changed the trans fluid as I did all of my fluids that day and while I was at the rear diff I pulled it and went ahead and replaced it because it looked scorched for some reason.

So tonight I put my truck in 2 and it shifted 1-2 perfect and if I put it back into 2 as I come to a stop all is well. When it's left in drive my throttle is touchy and coming to a stop it bumps as if something is sliding forward in my bed. Like I said if I start out in 2 it's all good. Now I'm leaning towards three different suspects;
1)TRS
2)TPS
3)Shift solenoid (or the plug)
I'm really just trying to come to my own conclusion and looking here for help Please!!!

I suspect a problem with the intermediate clutch seals. With the shifter in D the intermediate clutch coming on makes second gear. When you move the shifter to 2 you also get the intermediate band. Now there are two friction elements making second gear. Since it works in 2 that tells me that the intermediate clutch isn't applying correctly.

With that said could it still work fine sometimes and not others?

Seals can do that for a while, then it will stop working.
