TPS adjustment or trans problem
TPS adjustment or trans problem
Installed a new IP on my 1994 F350 7.3 IDI turbo w/ E4OD trans a couple weeks ago now my trans is acting goofy, like the 1-2 shift is a bit hard and when in overdrive if I hit a hill or get behind a slow person it just bogs down when i mash the accelerator. to cure this I either tap the brakes which causes the torque converter to lock thus restoring full acceleration or hit the o/d cancel which puts it in third gear and this is ok but i am afraid of tearing something up since the E4OD is both sensitive and expensive to repair. Additionally the trans shifts into overdrive @35-40 mph which is in my opinion way too low. other than this the only issue i have had is the tps went out just before i replaced the IP so i replaced it with a new one then a few days later the o/d lite kept flashing so i checked the code and got a tps code again this time i went to ford and bought it and cleared the code now it has no codes. THe fluid is pretty clean and dont smell burnt, I changed the fluid and strainer as well as an add-on inline filter about 5000 miles ago inside the pan was pretty clean but the magnet inside the pan had alot stuck to it but nothing out of the ordinary. I just decided to service the trans b/c the truck had sat for 2 years before I got it everything was completely fine til now. So now is there a method for adjusting the tps or is my E4OD about to take a huge $#it on my visa bill? THANKS for any advice on this one guys as the E40D is a beast of which I have ZERO experience!
not really I put it in the same position it was on the old pump for the most part anyway. I used paint to mark the bracket with the bolt holes and put it back in relatively the same place on the new pump and i have made slight
adjustments both ways but havnt made much progress
Also thanks for the link you posted I will be bringing my multimeter home from work tomorrow and setting the tps. I will keep posting as to my progress

Fixed it!!! I followed the instructions on the link posted and now the trans does really well. 1-2 shift is still kinda harsh but not bad, I set the voltage almost exactly 1.2@idle but the highest it got @wot was 4.4 which i assume is still ok. I noticed my trans cooler and the lines going to it were wet with atf so I think the cooler is probably sucking air in as well so now I am going to get a new cooler, hoses and a replacement for that inline filter and that should wrap it up. Thanks again for your help guys!
wow you hit 4.4V while @ 1.2V idle? you did the best iv ever read about.most of us can only get about 4.0-4.1V while maintaining (the slightly more important) 1.2V idle.
great job!
yeah,no more falling on it's face trying to go uphill right lol.rather than remained locked and in 3rd she'll unlock, rev, kick down to 2nd (if needed/speed slow enough) scream and pull like a bugger and just go like your telling it too.non of that shifting too early and lugging in od,nor not kicking down to 3rd until way too late either.
now take note of your odo mileage.just swap and reset a new one again 50k miles from now, to keep her shifting just like new.
(non of the other sensors are medium ware like that one.don't change any of the others without reason.)
great job!

Been reading several threads ,the cleansing,( I haven't done the firewall connections under hood yet) , but I changed the rh connector plug, cleaned diff plug ,shifter plug and ip terminals. Reset tps to 1.209- 4.056 . Od light is still flashing immideately after startup, shifts not as smooth as before ,and shift points are high (rpm. Before I was @ +- 1.1 - 3.8 ? I think . The only codes I have now is 26 maf , and 68 . I think that's for TOT ? I would go back to 1.1v tps for smoother shifting but the code for out of range fipl would prob. Come back and I don't know why the od light is still flashing. ..... Very tired now and stumped . Can u change TOT sensor, by itself?, would a bad wire in the column cause od light flashing .?????? Guess I won't be driving it to Church Tomorrow. Thanks fellas, I'm learning a lot ,just wish I cold get this right.
1994 f250 idi e40d 238990mi. Nutin fancy, new Psom chip, 2 unnecessary rebuilds, most all sensors replaced, new cooling sys,ac sys, tires, brakes, starter, started on paint(my painter and friend died @38, I got in a wreck, then hurt @ home, lost job , stepped up to a cane from crutches, and wheelchair. So if I can get this finally fixed. I wold be sooooooo happy. Hope Nutin else goes wrong. Lol. Thanks Leroy ,I don't know much either, but dealing w aamc* and local rip off shop owners will teach u a lot. You get screwed once u enter the door. They give a bad name for all the good shops and mechs. I just appreciate all the honest help.
I gotta find out about the maf and tot codes. ??? Air valve/restriction somewhere, and tot ground?, short? Dunno yet! But it's gonna get fixed! Long as we keep waking up on the right side of the dirt !
GOD got this! , and he led me to all of you.
