Today I received my 6637 kit from Riff Raff (awesome, quick shipping!). One thing I forgot to ask when I bought the kit is this, will my exhaust temps increase if I have not increased the size of my exhaust? I cannot afford to modify my exhaust at this time and was just wondering. Thanks in advance. I bought this kit because the stock airbox was allowing dirt into the turbo sleeve.
Or if you want, you can put a straight pipe in place of the muffler. Not sure if NV looks for mufflers or not on Diesels, but if not, it's a decent way to get a lot more flow in the exhaust for a few bucks.
I'm not the only one who has experienced issues with pulling grade after the 6637 install. I still haven't installed a wicked wheel. I'll probably do that when I install bellowed up pipes.
Now I am a little concerned because this is the first I have heard of this. I do pull a 8k trailer over the passes in Nevada very often. I have not done any mods to the truck besides buying the 6637 and the reason I went to this mod was simply to keep dirt out of the turbo the stock box was not doing.
Before the mod, I could accelerate up a 7% grade in 6th gear. After the mod, it loses speed and turbo surge is very evident, requiring a downshift.
I couldn't find any mention of this before I performed the install. I wish I had purchased and installed a wicked wheel & turbo pedestal o-rings along with the 6637 so I wouldn't have had to deal with my enraged wife sitting next to me when our work truck wouldn't pull a 7% grade.
I'm pretty sure the turbo surge will clear up after said mods are installed. Right now we're throwing maintenance money into the truck and the mod list won't quit growing.
I get the same thing with my set-up. I don't have the 6637 but a cold air intake. I don't really pull heavy loads. I can even hear the surge with no load going fast up a steep hill. Performance does not seem to be an issue for me but not a heavy load. If I downshift it disappears for the most part. I need to look into the WW as well I guess. I have not tried it in stock tune yet, maybe I would not get it then. I did not really know it was turbo surge until recently.
My 2002 is an auto, will this be a problem since I cant really downshift. I am planning on this mod, once done I will road test it and see what happens. I wish I would have known about this before I bought this mod. Again, I only did this because I was getting small amounts of dirt in the turbo boot.
Driving it with the overdrive off it will be better when going up hills. I can't really say with a heavier load. I think my camper is only about 5000 lbs and most of the time we just store it at the lake.
