Have a 351 casting number is D2AE-CA 2J29
Is this a cobra jet? and does it have 4 bolt or 2?
If i need to track down more numbers I can. Thanks for the help!
D2AE-CA is a very common cast code, they came from Ford as 2 bolt mains, 4 bolt mains, with 2V heads, 4V heads, base 4V, HO, Cobra Jet and Boss. there's no difference in the block itself, depends how it got built up from Ford
2J29 is the casting date code, 2 is the decade, J is the month(I is not used) and 29 the day,
Nov 29, 1972... so it was produced for and installed in a 1973 model year car.
there's also a build date code stamped in on the front face of the block, it tells the day the block was actually assembled, same method of decode.
you'll have to drop the pan to find out if it's 2 bolt mains or 4 bolt, they came both
I appreciate the help guess Ill be pullin the pan soon. The intake doesnt match up tho its D1AE-9428 DA does that tell me anything besides it came from a large car? Also it does have a 2 barrel does that mean its prolly 2 bolt?
the D1AE intake should be non-EGR, you're right that it doesn't match the block as original. possible that somebody swapped any available 2V intake on in place of an original 4V in the mid/late 70's, could've swapped the heads too?
is there a number in the top corners of the heads near the valve cover?
all bets are off until you see it with your own eyes, Ford used what they had. factory 4V's have been found with 2 bolts and vice versa
Yeah it has the 2 stamped for 2v maybe the heads matched the intake or the block and heads match who knows. There was a tag under the passenger side valve cover but I couldnt read the stamp it was in between the rockers kinda weird theres also a 28 casted on the front of the driver side head dont know if its relevent. Like to know where the engine came from but apparently its parted. 71 intake 72 block so deffinetly not factory right?
under the valvecover between the springs there's a casting date for the head, could shine more light on what you've got, not that there's much difference in US 2V heads until you get into the D5 M/400's
Well Ive done as much homework as I can without pulling the pan. Im sure yall get tired of people thinking they have a cobra jet just cause the casting number is C2AE It should be put at the top of the forum I had to call previous ownerS of my truck to finally decipher that the engine was pieced together when the truck was restored in the mid eighties... bit odd but the guy wanted decent gas mileage and the old 302 was shot so he rounded up an engine and swapped the heads. Apparently it came from a torino. I dont suppose that helps me considering there were many engine packages for torinos. He did say it was a two door tho. Thats all I could find. One other question tho the parts store guy told me the plugs are the same for 302 as 351C and I argued because from my understanding 351C uses 14mm plugs. Should I call a different part guy? Will 5/8 plugs mess me up? Preciate all the help!
i'd find another parts guy, he's probably refering to a 351W using the same plugs as a 302? vin code H covers both 351W and 351C, use vin code Q for Cleveland specific parts other than intake/exhaust manifold gaskets, Q code is a 4V
