Local Craigslist find, person is selling a new set of Headman long tube headers for 351m/400. Will putting headers on a basiclly stock 400 make any noticable performance / mielage gains? They are also selling 4bbl Edelbrock intake with the 2bbl adapter for the same engine. The parts are new never installed. Would the intake fit a 400 or does it require some sort of spacers to fit the taller block hight on the 400? They are asking 175 for all, which is why this is interesting me.
Kevin
if the intake is made for the 351M, not a 351C, it will fit the 400, because the 351M and 400 have the same deck height. and the headers and intake will give you some decent power gains. if you really want some added omph though, get an aftermarket timing chain and gear set, not a stock replacement. the 400 came off the factory floor with 6 degrees of cam retard. aftermarket sets will fix this, and make very noticeable gains.
Thanks, I have read on this forum about the timing issues, I just recently bought the truck off of a car lot and was able to get the previous owners info but have not contacted them to find out what if any work has been done to the engine. The timing set may have already been swapped out. The car lot says it has 180,000 miles, If this is true it has had to have at least one chain swap.
thanks again.
180,000 miles doesnt necessarily mean the chain has been changed. and if it was, it doesnt mean that they went aftermarket. stock replacements are the same as what is getting replaced.
Well I picked them up tonight. headers were on a a 400cid truck for less then 6 months looked like new with fresh paint. Manifold with2bbl adapter new and never installed all for $175. The only thing I need to buy is gaskets and collectors to exhaust adapters.
Has anyone had any experience with running this manifold with the 2bbl adapter on a 400cid ?

It kinda defeats the purpose to install new headers and a 4bbl aluminum intake and run a 2bbl carb, if a new carb isn't in the budget check out CL or Ebay for a used Edelbrock 600, sometimes you can pick one up for under 50 bucks.
depends what kinda rpms youll be running. i prefer the 4bbl myself, but that motorcraft 2bbl dumps fuel. know a guy who swapped the MC for a 4bbl, and noticed only a change in his fuel mileage on a 351W. so he put the 2bbl back on. lol. its up to you.
I guess I will run the 2bbl for a few months and get a baseline on miealge and performance and keep a look out for a used 4bbl to rebuild and install.
Does anyone know the CFM rating on a 2150 2bbl?
paul here, these are just my thoughts, but based on what you have told us so far, no off to any one else but i go with 460. install your headers, LOSE that factory timing chain first. he speaks the truth in my exp. factory retard is built in to please uncle sam.no joke and you know the best part. for now i do not believe you need the top dog. get a drive from summit that puts your cam where it will be happy. i encourage you to run your 4 b manifold. but keep your tb for now. sort out the new engine combo first and then look around for a decent 4b when you do remember when you do. do not over carb. you will not be happy. there are formulas available right here that will help you plus some very decent very serious people. WHEW, did i say all that. my root point do your carb LAST. do not turn your nose up at 2bs. forget about mpg. for now. think VELOCITY. again just my thoughts. its all good and its just a forum. bottom line, go for it and never give up paul md
buy your chain from tmi. if you really get down with your 400 you are eventually going to need him. very few outfits understand the 335,s like they do and there parts are rock solid.for exp, try finding some decent slugs without a second mortage on your homestead. tmi has them later me
father/son. you are dead nut about tmeyer. everything i have learned about my 400 was off of their website and links on their website. (a LOT of reading!!) and my 400 has a tmeyer 454 stroker kit in its future. conkl, if your interested in spending the cash, FAST (Fuel, Air, Spark Technologies) makes 4bbl throttle body fuel injection kits. they are at fuelairspark.com from what ive found, these kits are a fairly inexpensive way to gain the benefits of EFI, and are also fairly easy to install. again, another product in the future of my 400.
