there was a brake controller in my truck when i bought it and the old guy that owned it said that it was factory. but i cant find anything that says they offered a factory brake controller in 1997. it doesnt seem to work any more and i cant find any info on it to trouble shoot it. no name brand or anything. just a spin *** on each side and some slide lever on the front? any ideas?
You probably just need to buy a new one. I bought my truck new and it didn't have the option to get a controller with it. I even have the tow option.
That does not mean that they didn't have one just that I have never seen a factory one.
It was NOT a factory option. Maybe installed by the dealer when he bought it, but not factory.
Sounds like a Tekonsha Voyager controller.
If all the wires are hooked up and it still doesn't work, its time to chuck it and buy a new one.

yeah, that looks to be it. should i buy the same unit. how good are they? will the wire harness fit the p3? the one i have i have used 15 times since i bought the truck in december. and thats only till may then i deployed
I know several people that have them and I had one in my old truck... no complaints. The wire harness should work for any controller... it's just 4 wires out of the back of the controller with an adapter to plug into your truck (unless someone hillbilly wired it in because they didn't want to spend $15 for the adapter).
You should email me some pics of your Chevy... I have an 83 3/4 ton 4x4 that I'm going to start messing with next year hopefully.
i have the same break controller in my truck mine works but if you have to replace it spend the extra cash for one with the inertia switch they give you much smoother breaking

I have the P3 and I like it. but as Pete said I have read that the brakesmart works real well and also the maxbrake, but they are not cheap.

I don't know yet, but I want to do something besides stuff a big block in it because there are just so dang many of those trucks on the road I don't want it to be like 1,000 others out there. I'm thinking uncorked 6.4L PSD with a manual trans behind it, mild lift, and keep the body mostly stock for the sleeper look. Of course, the sleeper look will be out the window as soon as huge clouds of black smoke start pouring out the tailpipes

good luck. its gunna be a wiring nightmere! but cool when its done. why the mild lift? go big or go home! seeing as i can fit 35's on the k20 stock im gunna shoot for 57" michelin xl's under it. i like that your gunna keep it clean though.

Mild lift just because everybody and their dog throws huge lifts under them. Again... sleeper.
