I've been looking for some info for the trailer brake controller wiring. Anyone got some info? 1997 F250 is what I'm trying to wire. Can't find anything on factory wiring either. I don't really know if it came with or without the controller hookup.
Thanks
I'm pretty sure my '96 F350 had trailer package as the 7 pin plug was in the back. I think it had the plug under the dash for the brake controller. I know my '99 and '00 Superdutys did.
Does it have the factory 7 pin plug under the back of the bumper? If not, then likely doesn't have wiring for it.
Not a big deal to tap into brake light switch and run brake wire to the back. You can buy those inline plugs that tap into the rear harness for the lights and gives you the 7 pin plug. Hook up the brake wire you run back and you're in business.

Not necessarily, my '95 didn't have a 7 pin connector under the bumper, but it does have the relay box, under dash connector, and the black and gray connectors behind the spare tire. All I had to do was go to the junk yard and find the harness, then splice into an aftermarket plug. You can also see if the Ford part is available at the parts counter, then just plug into the existing harness. I thinks it's over $100 though.
You have the tow package. You need to get the pig tail & plug from a trailer store, splice it to your controller and plug it in under the ash tray.
Then get the trailer plug for the rear and plug it into the two plugs at the rear of the truck.
I'll go poking around under the ash tray and see if I can find the plug from the factory. When I bought the brake controller I also got the pigtail too. It was a guess on my part but if the one in the photo is the right one I got lucky. That's what mine looks like. I'll have at it tomorrow!
Thanks!!!

My '99 didn't have the plug either. I think they just cheapened it up again? The '96 had the plug molded right into the harness and mounted in the back. My '99 was just a pigtail hanging on the frame that I had to put the plug on. My 2000 was the same way, no plug.
I located the harness, but, looks like it had a controller at one time and the installer cut the plug off! There are scotch locks on the ends of the harness to where the old controller was wired. I've got the wires but are they ever short! If only people would take the time! It would have been easier for the guy to have used the pig tail instead of cutting everything! Now it's perseverance! I'll win!!
I know my 1990 didn't have the tow package but it still had the 2 connectors tucked up into the drivers side of the frame at the back. I'm not sure if it had the one under dash, wish I still had the truck to look.
Youve gotta s pluce the wires anyway, I would just splice directly
to y ou controller and not have rbe connector. It would just be
one more spot for a bad connection. I like the butt connectors that
have a heat shrink insulator for rhis and a lot of other applications.
Hello,
In post #6 there is a picture of a 7 pin trailer plug receptacle with the the 2 stock pig-tail connectors on the ends... Does anyone know a manufacture, part number or where to buy this? I need this for my 92 F350.
Thanks
P.S. I f anyone is interested, I found the part in the first picture in post #6, the pig-tail that connects to the brake controller under the dash.
