I have an 08 F350 Dually. The info board on the dash has been talling me it is cleaning the exhaust filter. It is usually happening anywhere from 20-50 miles Is this normal? I spoke to a friend and he said he has only seen it once
HI, It is quite normal for the message board to tell you "cleaning exhaust filter" that cleaning is part of the system used to comply with the Newest level of pollution control voted for by our congress and mandated upon truck manufacturers byt the US EPA. But, 20 to 40 miles seems way too often. I don't think there is any set pattern but I have the same truck as yours and mine seems to clean at around 150 miles. Based on hanging around this forum for a while now that seems to be the norm. Stand by and someone will give you more difinitive information. But, if it was me I'd take the truck by Ford and have them check it.
Mine was doing that too, regens about every 20 to 60 miles. I took it to the dealer and they reflashed with a more current program and replaced a stuck egr valve. The tech said he thought the egr valve was causing the excessive regens. I don't know if that's true but I'm back to 150 to 450 miles between regens now- depending on load and driving habits.
The cycle at which the DPF is cleaned does vary by user and loads, hwy/city driving how heavy your foot is and so on.
It is dependant upon too vary variables to say xx miles, but you are regening too often. Even if you were towing heavy I think that is a little too often. I would have them check it out.
If you don't let the cycle complete before you stop and turn off the ignition, it will try again after the truck warms up the next time you drive it. That may explain the 20 mile gap. Regen usually takes 10-20 minutes. Also, its best to drive over 40 mph when going through the cycle.
I just got back from a 2559 mile trip and mine regened only 4 times pulling a 11,000 fifth wheel from Wichita ks to Willcox AZ to Flagstaff AZ and back to Wichita KS. I drove around 70 on the interstate and 65 on the super 2's. Averaged 8 mpg (SUCKS). Did notice when I got back though that my right rear fender had a lot of soot on it. Guessing that this was from burning out the residue in the DPF.
your truck looks like mine, go figure. I was able to get the 8 up to almost 10 on my summer trip by keeping it below 60. The times i didn't I got what you got, 8 and it sucked just as bad. I ordered a 60 gallon fuel tank which should be here tomorrow because, as you know that 38 gallon tank don't get us far at 8mpg. Oh well, we got what we got. Ya gotta love congress.

You should never get soot out of the exhast. The DPF captures it all if it is not cracked. You must have a cracked DPF.
I've also noticed that some brands of diesel give very poor mileage and frequent and long regens. I had been running 11-12 mpg loaded with a truck camper with Sinclair, and used Cmex, and got 7 mpg over the tankfull and a regen that lasted 60 miles until I turned off the engine. All ulsd.
