I did a search and found a posting by kwikkordead where he installed the intake air temp sensor in the end of the 6637 filter. I plan on putting my filter on this weekend since I've located some 4" exhaust pipe and am curious as to how well this works. Has anyone else done this? What is required to mount the sensor to the filter? I would think that it would work better than just zipping it to something close to the filter, but would like some input as to yea or nea. I also read to tie the filter minder to the brake line and forget about it. I'm ok with that since I think I will be able to visually see if the filter is dirty since I will be ordering the "FAMOUS FILTER COVER" from Pete. What happens if I just remove the filter minder all together? Finally, I really appreciate everyone's input and help on this site!! FTE is the BEST!!
I think you got that backwards Dave. I have seen a few guys put the filter minder in the end of the filter and then you tie of the temp sensor to the brake line or some place handy. as for the filter you will like the mod and Pete's covers look great.
I put both the sensor and filter minder back in. Just look at the stock mounting holes and try to duplicate them on the new peice of pipe. I recommend doing it on a scrap piece of sheet metal first.
Actually, Dave does have it riht. A lotof guys have followed Guzzle's approach with the FM in the end of hte filter, but some work that Mike (Tenn) and gene did last year, turns out that the end of the filter housing on the intake tube side is actually the best place for getting that vacuum reading. On the other hand, Dan (Kwik) has posted a pic of his temperature sensor mounting a number of times, and he ran it in the same place that Guzzle put the FM - at teh end of the filter element right up against the fender wall.
Most folks have, like you said Colin, just ended up zip-tieing the sensor to teh brake MC.
What I'm doing personally is letting both the FM and the temp sensor ride on top of the wheel well liner, right under the filter. They both seem to ride well together without any problems at all.
Back to Dave's question. If you really feel that you must use the FM, I would try installing it near the extruded filter neck in the same manner that Guzzle used in his procedure. At that location, you have maximum air flow going past the measuring port, and will measure the "worst case" vacuum being experienced by the filter, which is roughly the same vacuum level that exists inside the intake tube and is the value that you really want to know anyway.
Since you have a 2000, the filter minder can go right in the trash. The 02's and up have them wired to an idiot light on the dash, we dont. As for the the temp sensor, I tied mine to the end of the master cylinder as close to the filter as I could get. This way the PCM is getting the most accurate reading of the air going into the filter.
I tied my sensor underneath the filter, and pu the FM in the end of filter used a 5/8" wood boring bit to do it works great, or you can ditch the FM if you want.
Thanks guys! I'm not worried about the filter minder, I'll let it ride. I just had concerns over the best placement for the air sensor. I even thought about trying to mount it to the piece of exhaust pipe, just outside of the end of the filter, and before the black factory tube going to the turbo.
I know I'm late, but I would place the air temp sens in the exhaust tube. I have heard of a couple guys doing this and getting a grommet to make it a pretty and air tight fix. I think it is silly to go through all the work of polishing and washing etc the engine bay to just have stuff rigged up with zipties "out of the way" That being said, I am a rigger by nature
Thanks Scott. Do you know where they located the sensor? I thought about putting it in the piece of 4" exhaust pipe that I'll be using for my connection.
If you want to go all out, put a vacuum guage in the dash that connects to the end of the filter where I put the temperature sensor. Then you can see the guage move if the filter is dirty.

Excellent call Kwik. I know Rick got mad last time I brought it up...but here goes! Keep in mind the filter minder is not in the same location as it was in the stock box. If you put it in the top of the filter it is AFTER the filter where it was previously before the filter.
This (in my backwards thought process) would require a different filter minder bc it is looking for a different pressure. See what I mean Vern?
This is exactly what I did (with a 3.5" long, 4" diameter elbowed exhaust pipe). And, actually it does look like a factory job.

Drilled a hole in the pipe, installed a rubber gromet, along with a dab of silicone, zip tied tight until dry (then cut & remove zip tie), inserted sensor, installed the wire wrap (like factory) over wires, and, Walla !!
It's done
