My brother has a 99' Ranger with a 3.0 v-6 and an automatic tranny, We have been trying to boost horsepower. I suggested he start in the breathing of the engine. K&N filter and exhaust. He bought the filter and I and he barely notice a difference. So we are gonna move onto something else. Can anyone suggest minor modifications to boost horsepower and torque. Thank you for any help.
cat-back exhaust will help some, also headers will eke out a few hp. might want to try the flow injection performance kit or "gutting" the air filter box...K&N filter alone won't really help your engine breathe much. port and polish your heads...the list goes on. good luck!
I had a '99 3.0L. I put in a KKM True-Rev sport induction kit and that helped a little. I didn't really notice the difference until after I took it off though. I would suggest that and a cat-back exhaust. I have that now on my 2K 4.0L and I REALLY noticed the difference. Seems like no matter how much air you let in, there is too much resistance going out so you have to clear out the rear end first! If you want my suggestion, go with the KKM and a Borla split-rear cat back exhaust. I got both for around $500. I had the filter on in less than 20 mins, and the exhaust on in around an hour. And let me tell ya... it was the easiest system to put on I have ever seen! I will say that it isn't really loud, has a nice growl to it, but it's not earthshaking. Just my $.05
My advice is dont waste your money on performance mods as its the auto tranny thats the problem. Let me explain my reasoning.
I recently purchased a 1998 Ranger with the 3.0 V6 and a 5 speed manual tranny. In the selection process I also got to drive one with the 3.0 and an auto tranny, what a slow old pig that was, my 1996 Ranger with the 2.3 four banger and a 5 speed has more get up and go. Ive had the 98 for several weeks now and still unintensionally squeal the tires occasionally when I take off. I love the 96 but needed more horses as we race motorcycles and have to haul a two bike trailer, with bikes on of course, and a bunch of tools, gear, etc. We really tested it recently by having two Honda CBR600's on the trailer and a Kawasaki 600 in the bed, it pulled the load with no problem, accelerated very well and had no prob cruising at 70 mph. It actually took off better with the extra weight over the back wheels but Im not going to keep the Kwakker in the back.
So, the 3.0 V6 has the get up and go but that auto tranny dont want to let it get up and go.
Dont waste good money on performance mods, save your money and buy one with a manual tranny.
