Help with Installing a Brake Controller?
On the wiring I got from the Ford dealer the wires are tagged like this:
BLUE = Trailer Brake
WHITE = Ground
PINK/WHITE = Brake Cont. Feed
RED/WHITE = Brake Signal
On my brake controller I have the following wires along with the description from the instructions:
WHITE = Ground wire, must be connected to a grounded metal part of the firewall or directly to the negative terminal of the battery.
BLUE = Brake wire, must be connected directly to the trailer brake wire.
RED = Stoplight wire, must be connected to the non-powered wire of the stoplight switch or tow package harness. It is recommended that a 20 amp inline fused be used when making this connection.
BLACK = Power wire must be connected through a 20 amp self resetting circuit breaker to the positive terminal of the battery.
I'm thinking the first two seem kind of obvious?
Blue (Truck) = Blue (Controller)
White (Truck) = White (Controller)
But I'm not sure on the last two. Would it be:
Red/White (Truck) = Red (Controller)
Pink/White (Truck) = Black (Controller)
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
This thread might help you with the wiring:

and this one here on locating the harness connection on the Excursion:

It's there, you just have to look for it. Mine was under the AC controls, all the way at the bottom, just above the carpet. You can ALMOST see it from under the gauge consol, but there is a full vertical brace in the way. The harness was located just to the center from the "wall" brace to the right of the steering column area.
Remember, there may be a fuse that is not currently in place that you might have to install.
One other question. I guess I've always assume the brake controller was either going to work (i.e., helps stop the trailer, if move the slider the brakes will engage on the trailer, etc) or they were not; I didn't think there was any in between. Is there a possibility they can only partially work or fail if not wired exactly right? Googling around for an answer I seemed to come across some threads that hinted at this.
thanks!
