Help with Installing a Brake Controller?

Alright, I would think this would be relatively simple but the instructions are confusing. I have a Hayes Lemmerz Synchronizer 81725 that I had previously installed in my 2007 F150. I sold my F150 and bought a 2005 Excursion. When I disconnected the controller I took note of the wire colors on the F150 and how they matched up to the wire colors on the controller, thinking that I would just have to hook it back up the same way on the Excursion. However, my Excursion didn't come with the brake wiring so I went to a Ford dealership and got the connector. Unfortunately, the colors are different. Can anyone help me match them up properly?

On the wiring I got from the Ford dealer the wires are tagged like this:

BLUE = Trailer Brake
WHITE = Ground
PINK/WHITE = Brake Cont. Feed
RED/WHITE = Brake Signal

On my brake controller I have the following wires along with the description from the instructions:

WHITE = Ground wire, must be connected to a grounded metal part of the firewall or directly to the negative terminal of the battery.

BLUE = Brake wire, must be connected directly to the trailer brake wire.

RED = Stoplight wire, must be connected to the non-powered wire of the stoplight switch or tow package harness. It is recommended that a 20 amp inline fused be used when making this connection.

BLACK = Power wire must be connected through a 20 amp self resetting circuit breaker to the positive terminal of the battery.

I'm thinking the first two seem kind of obvious?

Blue (Truck) = Blue (Controller)
White (Truck) = White (Controller)

But I'm not sure on the last two. Would it be:

Red/White (Truck) = Red (Controller)
Pink/White (Truck) = Black (Controller)

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Excursion Trailer Brake Controller Harness

From what you have written, I would intrepret the instructions exactly as you have.

This thread might help you with the wiring:

and this one here on locating the harness connection on the Excursion:

It's there, you just have to look for it. Mine was under the AC controls, all the way at the bottom, just above the carpet. You can ALMOST see it from under the gauge consol, but there is a full vertical brace in the way. The harness was located just to the center from the "wall" brace to the right of the steering column area.

Remember, there may be a fuse that is not currently in place that you might have to install.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'll wire it up temporarily and give it a try to see if the brakes are working. I did find the harness connection under the dash on the X, it was over behind the little "cubbyhole" the vehicle has.

One other question. I guess I've always assume the brake controller was either going to work (i.e., helps stop the trailer, if move the slider the brakes will engage on the trailer, etc) or they were not; I didn't think there was any in between. Is there a possibility they can only partially work or fail if not wired exactly right? Googling around for an answer I seemed to come across some threads that hinted at this.

thanks!
