I was working on my 92 F150 4X4 today to get it ready for winter. Replaced the right side motor mount and installed a block heater. Noticed that the front diferential doesn't have a vent. At least that I could find. My 79 and 75 front Dana 44 solid axles have vents. Looked in the Ford shop manual and don't see one. Just wanted to double check. I have had the rear ones plug up before and blow out my axle seals. Does anyone have one on theirs?
I cleaned the top of the housing really good today and don't see any holes or something broken off. Just cast iron. Could even see some of the yellow marks on it. There is a small hose cliped to the frame but is about a foot too short and has a white plug on the end. Looks factory. Maybe the newer Dana 44's don't have a vent?
I don't have any axle tubes for the 92 F150 with the IFS 44. I would think that it has to have one or it would blow out the seals. So would that be more towards the drivers side or passenger. I had the drivers side tire off today and cleaned up the top pretty good. Didn't see but I do think there should be one somewhere on it. Will check it out some more tomorrow. Was busy putting a tool box in the back and painting my project car hood. Thanks for the help.
My 94 f150 has a vent tube that was still clipped to the frame but had torn off at the top of the diff. Explained why my diff was always covered in muck. Replaced the old hose with a new one when I changed the fluid front and rear last year. Diff stays clean now.
