I don't have a special tool for removing this on my 94 long bed 5.0L. How is it removed? I have read the other threads about dropping the tank but no info on how to remove the threaded ring. It appears to require some sort of spanner wrench but I'm wondering if I can just use a brass drift punch to loosen it. (I'm replacing the sending unit on the front tank.)

yes sir that is what most use ~just tap it counter clockwise to remove and alternate on the tabs -and go the opposite way to reinstall~ till it reaches it's stopping point-if ya look real close you will see how it goes so far and stops good luck
oh and make sure the rubber o ring don't shift-mine did on 2 different trucks
then ya get leaks

Are you sure it's threaded? Mine wasn't. I just did my '88 and the ring simply puts pressure on the pump flange which sits on the O ring that sits in a groove.
There is a special too but you don't need it. A brass drift or some other non sparking type of punch will work.
If your dropping your tank to the ground, make sure you inspect the rubber grommet that seats the emissions control valve. It's a dealer item and "Bronco grave yard" has them as well. They cost about $6.00. But, if it's cracked or deteriotated, you'll smell and or leak gas.
