I am new to the forum, and I have a question, I bought a 1994 XLT today with a 5.0. Looks like it has 2 cats on it and of course a muffler. My question is what if I just switch out the factory muffler for a 40 series flwmstr. Turned it down right where it sits. Would this have any sound or what?
thanks in advance, I also plan to have atleast one of the cats cut off.
The bad thing about a turn down right at the muffler is, you will gat a droan in the cab and you will not get the scavenging effect that the flowmaster was designed to do
Yea and a lot of the "sound", the deep throaty rumble is developed in a tail pipe, the complete lack of one just plain sounds bad. Bad as in "terrible" not bad as in "cool", a short "turn down" right at the muffler outlet is just not enough to get it.
I really just want a cheap way to have a decent sound, anything is better than stock, and I really like a Flowmaster sound on a Ford 5.0; I guess I could always try it and if I don't like it then have it fixed.
Hey TexasGuy001 are you saying no muffler with only one cat or cut the cat and put a muffler on. I am also going to assume that I should cut the cat off thats behind the O2 sensor (cat towards rear of truck)
So just leave the regular rusted looking tailpipe hooked up like it is from the factory. I thought that the dumping off the flowmaster helps it echo off of the bed or something to that nature. I am going in the morning to get it done, so please keep the advice coming.
just replace the stock muffler with the flowmaster. Leave everything else as it is since you're trying to save money and have a decent sound. So yes hook up the rest of the stock pipe sending it out the back of the truck and youll have that throaty flowmaster sound.
Is it really gonna sound bad if I just dump it under the bed? I always hear Chevy's with flows around my town. Lots of them dump on their bed. The 5.0's always sound the best though.
As others have said it will not sound as good as it would if you let it dump out the back. It will be loud but flowmaster is also built for that tone that you wont get much of unless it has some pipe after the muffler
