If I have a single in single out muffler will I be able to run 2 pipes out the back later on? Because is so I could just dump it under the bed for now, and when I got tired of it just have the new pipe ran into some tips. What ya think?
I really just want a cheap way to have a decent sound, anything is better than stock, and I really like a Flowmaster sound on a Ford 5.0; I guess I could always try it and if I don't like it then have it fixed.
Hey TexasGuy001 are you saying no muffler with only one cat or cut the cat and put a muffler on. I am also going to assume that I should cut the cat off thats behind the O2 sensor (cat towards rear of truck)
thanks
I meant run a muffler with the front cat. I agree the turn down idea is not really as good for performance. You could always do that for a little bit and then get tail pipes later, if cost is the issue.
If you are going to just run turndowns for right now and want duals later then get a single in dual out to start with and put 2 turndowns on it.
I think he is against the stock tail pipe for the same reason I don't like it. It looks puny.
I did not realize before that the truck had a misfire. If that is the case then I would figure out what is causing it and/or give the truck a tune up first.
Ok I did a tune up today, or atleast somewhat of one. Cap, rotor, plugs- I ran the codes and boom 122 TPS. So yeah I am gonna buy one and stick it on there and see what happens. Hopefully this fixes it. The reason I don't like the stock tailpipe is b/c it is all rusted up and looks like crap. But I am gonna have to go ahead and run it out the back with the factory pipe. I actually didn't get to go to the muffler shop 2day. Local muffler shop was closed today for some random reason??? Is there any sound difference with the dual out vs. the single out, whats the big diff other than the obvious?
and kc0rey as for this-"
You remind me of my neighbor....$200 car with $5000 worth of wheels and sound system. "
I am far from that, I am a college student with a ol' pickup truck with a wife and kid. I am just on a budget and was already working on getting the CEL stuff worked out. You remind me of a smartass, but I sure do appreciate your input

I am a smartass.....but, I wasn't being one when I posted that. Your post made you look like somebody who doesn't have his priorities straight. The need for a performance sound with out taking care of the basics first.
I just got the truck on Friday, I have had Trans am's, Z28's and Mustang GT's for a portion of my life and then I had to settle down when I had my kid. I have been driving a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora with a V8, but of course no exhaust, so I guess I am kinda excited to actually be able to have something that sounds good.
2mrw I am going to change the tranny fluid and filter and prolly add some Lucas, along with the TPS. I also need one of the hoses that comes off the throttle body and goes into the single intake. My bottom piece is all messed up where it seals around the TB, ANy good places to get this. Also gonna thrown in a K&N since it needs a new air filter as well.
P.S. I'm a smartass too. You have to be when you drive a Ford, damn Chevy guy's
OK I went to the muffler shop today and got a used 40 series installed for $70, which ain't to bad considering they wanted $140 for a new one. I didn't get the cats cut off though, the guy said he would cut both of them off though no problem and put a Y pipe in where the pipe goes into the catalytic converter. Therefore connecting the 2 pipes and making one. And since my 02 sensor is before my cats I should have no problem. The muffler doesn't have much sound though with the 2 converters on there as he said it wouldn't. It is better than nothing though.
Those cats soak up alot of sound, especially if they are the originals. When I had my tranny rebuilt, the shop insisted on cutting a window out of the front cat and carving out the honeycomb with a screwdriver. Then they welded the window back onto it. Basically left it hollow. They did this to reduce heat buildup if it was old and plugged. Anyway, the truck exhaust was quite a bit louder after he did that, even though the second cat and original muffler were still there.
On my 83 F150 302 I had a 3" single coming out before the rear wheel. I used a Walker Turbo muffler with the original cat. Sounded good if you got on it but quiet at idle and no drone in the cab. The old stock muffler and tail pipe was toast.

when my stock pipe rusted out I went and got a 3" high flow cat and went with a flowmaster super 40 and had custom mandrel bent 3" pipes and it sounds pretty good it has that classic flowmaster rumble and it's not crazy loud but that might change if I throw on the set of BBK headers I have sitting around collecting dust. Like other posters said it's your truck but I would not put dumps on it but that's just my opinion.
