Hi all,
I'm getting ready to install my Transgo HD2 and do a tranny flush before a PHP tuner. So, I am wondering if regular MERCON will cut it. The price difference is huge, 10.99/gallon for MERCON vs. 4.49/quart for MERCON V. Is it really that much better? I just think ~$130 is too much to spend tranny fluid, unless it's practically a necessity to ensure the life of my tranny.
Thanks
If you know your trans is good, go for it! I put $110 of Mobil1 Syn Merc V ATF in mine after I did the TransGo install. It's a good investment. Do you have an upgraded trans cooler too? That will definitely extend the life of the fluid.
I don't have an upgraded cooler. I don't think there is anything wrong with my trans, as far as I know, it's the original with 137k on it. I might do the trans cooler in the future, and I don't really have the funds for V now, so I think I'll just run the MERCON for now and flush it with V sometime in the future, maybe when I put a bigger cooler in. I was just making sure it's not dumb to upgrade the trans and then put MERCON in it. As long as it's not going to hurt the trans, I think I'll skip the V for now, but thanks for the advice. Money's tight when you're 18! (but there will be money for the PHP sometimes my priorities get a bit mixed up, I guess.)
This may be confusing, since Mercon V has officially replaced Mercon.
Mercon V used to be incompatible with older Mercon but was reformulated to replace it.
That being said, you can still buy Mercon spec fluid (usually as universal DIII/Mercon ATF), that doesn't meet mercon V standards. The 4r100 only requires Mercon spec fluid.
