Mercon or Mercon V

I have a 97 f150 4.6 4r70w and had the filter changed at 197,700 miles and currently have 200,200 on the truck. I am wondering if I should take the truck in and have a fluid exchange to get the Mercon out and Mercon V put in? The reason I am is asking is with the milage on the truck would it do any harm to put Mercon V in. My tranny was orginally filled with Mercon, now that Mercon is being phased out, would it hurt to have Mercon V put in with such high miles? One final question does Mercon V actually run cooler compared to Mercon? I occasionally tow 4000# and don't want to fry the trans fluid.

Thanks preppypyro, this has been getting at me for a while now.

Any one else have a great way of getting all of the old fluid out? I've read on another forum to drop the pan, drain converter, and then disconnect both lines from trans and run compressed air to get the rest from the cooler.

You can put Merc V in a tranny that recommends the old Merc, but not the other way around.

Merc V just has a different add package and friction modifiers, I don't think it will make a difference in cooling, only a bigger tranny cooler can do that.

Depending on your tranny maintenance, if flushes have been done regularly then continue to do so, otherwise do a pan drop and change the fluid that way.

Cheers.

Thanx xtrford, the thing about the maintenance is that I don't know if it was flushed regularly. I bought the truck used and the previous owner only had it for a year and only put about 10k miles on it. I am currently the 3rd owner of it. When I got the truck I replaced the filter in the trans and about 3k miles ago I did a seconde filter change, but didn't drain the converter.

Is the stock tranny cooler enough cooling for towing around 4000-4500lbs in the summer?

You should be good to go. I'm sure your 4.6l can handle that trailer no problem.

As for changing it, I drained the pan on mine, and the convertor, and it worked well. I let it sit overnight to drip too. It was enough for me, Im not sure if you should worry about missing the little bit in the cooler though. I can see compressed air working though, if you are worried about it!

Merc V is less affected by torque converter heat generation. You'll be happier. You might be even a bit more happy if you have a transmission cooler.

Stock cooler as in OEM external or just the radiator in-tank?
