For those of you with no cat and running a custom tune, either from Spartan or Innovative, I have a smoke issue and I am wondering if its normal or something is "ready" to happen.
I sometimes, very inconsistant, have some smoke its like a greyish, maybe white...not 100% sure. It only happens when under 1/4 throttle or less but not all the time. If I rev it a little in the drive way all I get is a puff of black which I would expect. I only started noticing this when my cat disappeared after a MBRP turbo back install.
I guess my question is does the cat on a diesel really stop that much from comming out the tail pipe or is something going on.
The truck does not use any oil or coolant and there is no difference in fuel mileage than normal either. Doesnt get worse when towing or loaded heavy either.
The only reason I replaced the exhaust is cause the guy that owned before me butcherd it up when he installed the Banks exhaust and engine brake.
i think we have the same exhaust only difference is your tucks a 2006 and mine is 2005. i never see any white smoke, not really any gray unless it's just a really tiny puff of black smoke that could look a little gray i guess. my truck did have white smoke kinda like you are describing and it ended up needed a new turbo and egr cooler. but it was a big puff of white smoke when i would take off from a stop and would go a way in like 1 sec.
Were you losing coolant though. I thought maybe an EGR cooler but I cant tell for sure what color the smoke is and I'm not losing coolant. I still have warranty left but I am not sure if they will cover anything cause the cat is gone. I may pull the EGR valve and put the lift under the rear wheels and jack it up overnight to see if there is any coolant in there in the am sometime.
The turbo was off a while back for some stuck veins so I dont think there is an issue with that anymore.
If thats the case I will just delete the EGR and be done with it...but then while I am in there maybe a new turbo, headstuds, injectors, RR...uggghhh does it ever end.
Sarge i had my trubo replaced in Aug and i had a problem with white/gray smoke, with no coolant change. I called the dealer and they told me to watch my coolant. Asked on here and found out it is normal with a new turbo and it will go away. It did after a couple of weeks. The reason i say this is because you had stuck veins, did they replace or just clean ur turbo?
Hey 06powerstroke06, where abouts in Oklahoma are ya. I'm in Newcastle. Sorry sarge for the hijack. Although i run the tunes from innovative and i also got the egr deleted and cat deleted and sometimes i get a little puff of white smoke on start up. Haven't lost any coolant, turbo has been rebulit, i'm kinda curious as to what it is. I've done most of the mods to keep the longivity of the engine(i hope) but i'm starting, trying, to get to the point that if it ain't broke don't try to fix it till it is.

Sarge
i wasn't loosing any coolant. or atleast that i noticed, when my head gaskets blew i had coolant all over the degas and down the driver side front suspension.
i think you have the right idea about jacking the truck up and checking the EGR valve for coolant.
and i totally know what you mean about "once your in there" it justifies in our minds to get a new turbo, injectors, studs, fuel system, and on and on.
best of luck!

Reason: spel
The turbo was rebuilt in April and I have put about 4500 miles on it since then. Like I said it only started after the exhaust install and very intermittent.

I will let you know what happens as soon as I put "ZUSE" on the road. It the 85 Chevy, yeah I know, Plow truck I bought. When I do I will remove the EGR and raise the rear and see if it fill s with coolant.
