I was installing my guages today. I removed the High Ram Intake and low and behold one of the studs broke. I tried to drill it however it was a harheded stud. So I finally got it and heli-coiled the hole. Now the hunt for a M6x1.0x6 bolt. Hopefully I can find one cause I dont want to put those studs back in.
It broke when removing cuse they use a lock nut and they lock tite it in. So I didnt think that the 4 bolts made a difference. I figured I would go for a test drive...bad idea. It wont get out of its own way. Smokes pretty good too, and makes a farting noise. If anyone buys one of these things make sure to order a set of BOLTS dont use the studs. If the Heli-coil doesnt work I will have to buy another intake. Cant wait to see how much that is and what the install involves.
That sux...usually the holes get stripped out when you put it together..sounds like you'll have it under control though..getting broken studs out is no fun...nice work..
yes it does. I bought it used so I am not sure what monkey installed it but it was way too tight. Couple that with a poor design and it spells disaster on my part. I just hope that I can find the bolt in the am so I can get back on the road. I mean I can drive it but it barely moves.
I worked in mechanical maintenance for a while, and we used the things called KEEN SERTS I think they were called. they come on both standard and metric. They will have instructions when you buy them. You drill out to the size you need, screw in the keen sert, and you can put your bolt/stud in. They com in thin wall and thick wall. For the first failure i recommend a thin wall, that way should it EVER fail again ( i don't think too likely) you can drill it out to the thick wall and use the same size bolt/stud.
You drill the hole to the size in the instructions. Tap to the outside thread size listed in the instructions. Screw in till flush and using the installation tool and a hamer drive the three or four pins (depending on the size keen sert) till they are flush. We used the in industrial machinery and they work VERY well. You can definately get them at Fastenall Inc, and other places too I imagine.
I am going to get a set of those if the Heli-Coil doesnt hold. I can get them here locally if I need it. I will have the threaded rod here sometime today and hopefully get ut done and take it for a test drive. The Clean serts look really nice but the kit is quite expensive. We shall see how it goes today.
It does look like the Clean Serts will do a better job than the Heli-Coil. I will see if they have a kit and get it if its not too much and Post here.
Ok, I finished it up Friday afternoon. Everything went well with the repair. The heli-coil held good, and the nylock nut torqued up well and held after a 60 mile test drive. The only problem I had was the intercooler pipe kept popping off. After the third time my brain finally kicked in and told me to clean the boot, intake elbow, & Intercooler pipe with some brake clean, learned from a post here, and all was well.
How do I prevent all that oil in the intercooler. Just seems like a film in the intercooler pipe.
Sarge Do the CCV crankcase vent mod. Refer to the tech list posts. Was easy to do. Works great. No more oil drips on the intake boots. Mine exits over the rear axle. Pictures in the gallery

Thanks,
I always mean to get to that but it seems I never have time. Sometimes it sucks when you own your own shop. My truck always seems to take a back seat to mods. I actually had to put it on the schedule so I could get the guages done.
Like my horseshoer, whose horses are never shod.
Thats the fix though, Quite easy except for the air inlet disassembly. I think it took about 1.5 hr.
