Today after my truck sat outside all day and I plugged it in for 2 hours it started running rough and blowing black smoke out the tail pipe. I also heard nothing, rattle, from the glow plugs. The indicator on the dash came on and off as usual and I cycled them 2x's as usual but still she runs like poopie. Guess I will need a new flash or maybe something else. I retuend it to stock and drove it around some...man what a dog. I posted on this before but I guess its time I make an appointment with the dealer to have it fixed now that its cold out all the time.
Does anyone know if I get a new flash will I need to pay for new tunes or does my strategy stay the same.
I thought your strategy would change? Mine did. I went from the buzz flash (VXCF4 strategy code) and when i got the inductive heating flash last month my new strategy is VXCF5.
My strategy right now is the VXCF5 so I may already have the inductive heating flash. I dont hear any noise from the glow plugs anymore. Today even with it plugged in it stalled right after I started it, it did fire right back up but like I said lots of black smoke and it just chugs for about 2 minuites or so.
Its getting fuel, lot of black smoke, and if I leave it in the shop overnight, I keep it around 58* or so it will fire right up. I still hear no noise from the glow plugs even inside so I am not sure if maybe the FICM is going bad or what. Its under warranty and I have an ESP so I will call and make the appt. so it will get fixed. Just hoping its something simple...or maybe not?
Are you sure that they actually did it or did they just say that they did?
Could be they yanked my chain. I'll have to have a look-see through the paperwork to confirm.
Sarge, I believe there's a glow plug relay on the front of the passenger side valve cover that you can check. I'm at work so my 6.0 manual isn't handy. If it's blowing black smoke even after warm up and is 'doggy' then you may have an injector or two going bad.
If you're covered by warranty you may as well have them check it all out though! Let us know what happens.
Also, if it's an injector, try to see if you can smell unburned fuel. Or check it at idle if your getting way to strong of a diesel smell. If it is an injector, you should get a contribution/balance cylinder #? if you check for codes. This will not throw a CEL, so you could still have a code, just not showing up. However, tuning code readers will not pick it up, my SCT never did.
It could be the FICM as well as that does control the injectors and would make them kinda "doggy" if it was on the fritz.
The problem with it is it will only do it in the am or if it sits for about 4-6 hours or so. I ahve an appointment for first thing Monday morning. It doesnt blow out any black smoke when idling, only when its running rough. It dosent feel doggy, just more of a dog now that the tune is out of it.
I didnt check for codes as I figured it would only have the p1000 code from removing the tune. I will check it though, not with the SCT.
Do those of you with the Inductive Heating Flash get noise from the glow plugs when you turn the key on? I think I remember the glow plugs rattle some last winter when it was cold and I never ususally plugged it in unless it would go below 0*
I hope everyine had a safe and Happy New Year, and well wishes for a sucesful and great 2009.
Drove the truck up to the dealer today. Its about 25 or so miles from the shop and this is the first time since about September that I ahev driven without the SCT on it. Its hard to believe how much difference that the tuner makes in these trucks.
Anyway I was following a 08 SD with the 6.4 and that thing was smoking grey smoke and it stunk. I pulled up next to him and he says "wish I would have kept my 6.0" So I told him that it was smokin real bad and it stunk...he said yeah its been to the dealer 2 times and they tell him its normal. I just said I dont think it is....but I would recomend taking it to where I take mine. Guess I am glad that I too have 6.0. I know that not all of the 08's had issues but my truck has been real good to me and I love to drive it.
I will post the fate of it tomarrow when they give me a call.
