Sarges Smike Thread....Help

Hey all,

I am a little annoyed so I want to get this off my chest. My truck is obviously pissed at me for something. I have a thread going about the fuel guage issue with no replies, I can explain that again if need be.

So I will get to the smoke. Had the truck to the dealer for some work after a long trip, the short of the long story is, I was 300 miles from home and the rear end was howling bad. Took it to the dealer and figured since I was paying my deductable I would have them look at the over boost/screaching noise.

Rear end was rebuilt with no issues. They had to replace the center section on the turbo, now I have a smoke issue when I pull away from a stop/traficc light. The smoke is grey in color, maybe alittle blueish. Im not making oil, nor am I burning it, fuel mileage is still ok so far.

My qustion is will the truck smoke for a while after a repair like this, how long should I wait before I call the dealer back and ask them to address it. I have only put maybe 125 or so miles on it since I got it back. Another member said that it was normal and the smoke should go away.

I only bring this up because a woman made some not so nice gestures to me after I left a cloud of smoke at a traffic light, and its embarassing.

I did a contribution test with my AE everything looked good, there were no fluctuations in the graph, my EOT and ECT delta is 5-7 degrees so I dont think I have an issue there. I will reinstall my DD in the am and drive some.

The smoke is only there when you sit a an idle or stop it will puff a nice cloud for a few seconds and then clears up. If you drive it it wont smoke again until you come to a stop and pull away again.

It didnt do this before the turbo was replaced. Also there is no tune in the truck and I wont tune it until I get this sorted out. Im wondering if I shouldda just left it alone and bought the Power Max, but the thought of over boosting and detroying my HG's was always on my mind.

Im smashing my head against the wall thinking that this truck hates me. I am also making a point to drive it everyday because my warranty is up.

Thanks for Reading I Just Want This Thing Fixed!!

Sorry I can't help you directly with your trucks problem, but I do have a couple of comments:

1. I would care less about anyones gesture on your trucks smoking problem and wouldn't loose a minutes' sleep.

2. Your truck shouldn't be smoking so let the dealership fix the problem. I know your hoping the problem will just go away, but if it's still bothering you it's time to make an appointment and get it fixed.

Good Luck...

BTW.... Gestures at intersections can go both ways!

Thanks Troy,

I know gestures can go both ways, but I try not to participate in that stuff, 1 I dont need the trouble and 2 as a fire chief its probly wouldnt be good PR if I get arrested for something like a road rage incident.

Im gonna ride it out for a while more, the smoke doesnt seem as bad this morning, I am hoping that I will have the time Sunday to take it for a nice long ride and really heat things up.

Its almost the same as when the EGR/Oil Coolers were replaced...the truck smoked for a while afterwords just because of the amount of oil in the exhaust. Im hoping they went a little silly with the lub on the unison ring and it coated the exhaust a little bit, but my gut tells me thats not the case.

Smoking after 125 miles of a getting a new part shouldn't be normal. Whatever excess that needs to be burned should have been bruned off.

What about the smell? Does it smell like fuel? When I had an injector that was going wonky on me it smoked like you are describing. At idle and then cleared out while driving.

It really sounds like something with the fuel system.

If it's smoking enough to raise a concern on your part...I'd take it back to your dealership and ask them to double check that it's only unison lube your burning and not a leaking oil seal on the turbo...or something just as serous. If they're a respective shop, they shouldn't charge you a dime to make the truck right.

I know exactly how you feel, my truck was problem free for the first three years I've owned it. In the last 13-14 months it's been a different story, two different visits to a body shop (deer strike & thief repairs) along with all 4 injectors on the odd side of the engine. Recently (within the last 7-10 days) it's lost another injector(s)...I"m trying to learn enough about what the AE is telling me so I can figure this latest issue out. Those "gestures" can't be any worse that the "" and a couple of other comments I got from the guy in car next to me when the truck belched a large cloud of unburnt fuel on him & car. One of the few times I wish I had tinted windows so dark no one could see me in there.

When mine was leaking I didnt' get the looks and/or gestures, but I think the gun rack in the back had something to do with that.

Did you ever say what the smoke smells like? It could help point you in the right direction.

NRA stickers work just as well. I just don't have anything on this truck other than what Ford installed or the state requires...that maybe changing soon.

It definately smells like fuel. And the smoke is greyish for sure.

I have to wait until I get my tractor back and pick up a customer s car before it can go back in the shop. Unfortunately this is a busy time of year for me with this truck and I need it. The dealer will gladly give me a car but I dont need a car I need a truck.

You got a leaking injector I'm willing to bet.

Anyway I could narrow it down with the AE. I did a contribution test but everything was fine, no stumbling or hesitation as a matter of fact this thing runs better than it has in a long time.

I would almost expect to see a misfire or something show up on the contribution test, unless its the O-rings or the crush washer. If thats the case I may just save myself the hassle and do it myself...Just need to know if its a injecotr or O-ring/washer.

I would take it for that nice warm drive before I did anything. At 125 miles of commuting, the PCM is probably still learning.

I just called the dealer, and they said they would be glad to take it back and fix whatever it is that is causin the issue at no charge. Im not looking for a hand out so if there is an injector (s) going down I will pay the deductable.

Im gonna take it for a nice long drive later in the week...hopefully with my 10k tractor in tow.

I am glad that my dealer is willing to work with me and not turn there backs. If anyone is in the Upstate area look up Scott F. at Latham Ford...stand up folks there.

Maybe. I'm used to at most 50 miles of straight driving for it to learn. 125 is still a little much, but with computers that is possible.

Are you running a tune? It could have changed your timing enough that the miss is harder to miss(no pun intended, well maybe a little).

Also, could have tightened the oil rail too much.

So many variables.

Tex,

There is no tune in it. I took it out long before it went to the dealer, The CEL came on because the fuel sending unit was screwy so yesterday when I read the code I cleared the code and reset the KAM after I did the contribution test.

Im not sure why they would have messed with the oil rail they only replaced the turbo and rebuilt the rear end.

Hope that helps she some more light on the subject.

My bad. There was another post that I'm involved in where injectors were changed.
