Have 99 250 7.3 with 200,000, and 2000 450 7.3 with 103,000. Transmission fluid, filter and gasket changes should be done at what mileages and how regularly for maintenance.
Have heard both trans while cruising 70mph down hwy sounds like the rpms are sppeeding up, a loud whirring sound for 10 to 2o seconds and slowly whirring sound slows back down to normal. Mostly flat out driving, no large hills or anything.
Is this normal for trannys? Doesn't sound bad or anything.
Thanks in advice.
Well, not sure what to say about the "whirring" sound, other than it could be the fan.
As far as the trans service, it's every 30k by the book. But if you spend the money on syn, and install a larger trans cooler, you can push it to 50k or even more. I would take a sample and send it to get analyzed at 30, 45, and 60k just to be sure about the fluid however. The pan gasket is reusable, but my filter came with a new one anyway...
I'm a little behind in my fluid and filtr changes. Is this fluid change easily done at home or is taking to trns shop recommended? The filter is located inside the pan am i correct.
And what type of fluid and filters are recommended? Synthetic?
These 2 trucks i have, listed below should already have the large trans cooler on them?
Here is a link you might find useful...the filter is inside the pan. Don't even bother changing it...it will only stop marbles and large chunks. If you really want to filter the tranny fluid add an external filter - a real filter!
It's easily done at home, for sure. I will tell you this though -- until you're sure on the health of the transmissions, just use dino. It takes about $100 worth of syn fluid per trans. The Mercon V spec has been changed so we can run it in our transmissions. I am running Mobil1 Syn Mercon V in mine, and so are many others. It's working very well
The stock cooler is only 9 rows. I am running a 26 row 6.0L cooler which really cools things down. You can also add on an aux cooler in front of the AC condenser. I prefer the 6.0L approach, but both work.
Here's what the stock & 6.0L coolers look like (the I/Cs are behind the trans coolers):
