trying to find reverse light switch

hello. the reverse lights dont work on my 1972 ford F250. i was wondering where i can expect to find the switch. it looks like it used to either be auto or manual on the column, but now it has the granny gear on the floor. im guessing whoever switched out the tranny didn't care to hook up this switch. so that would lead me to believe the switch is somewhere in the steering column or transmission. am i right?

im 15 so im new to this. how exactly would i fix it?

Don't know if there is a fix for you. The column switch is controlled by the gear shift arm. Since it is now on the floor, the fix may be adding a flip switch on the dash area.

The transmission top cover should have a switch in it that is closed when in reverse. Just wire this in, and you have automatic backup lights.

If the truck was originally an auto, the backup lights are controlled by the Neutral Safety Switch located at the bottom of the steering column.

With a 3 speed manual, the backup light switch is mounted on the transmission.

With a 4 speed, the backup light switch threads into the shift tower.

The 4 speed switch location varies, depending on whether it's a New Process 435 or a Warner, but the switch is the same for both.

It's prolly there now, because otherwise, you'd have fluid leaking from the threaded hole.

6L5Z15520A .. Backup Lamp Switch (Motorcraft SW6396) / 6L5Z15520A replaced C9TZ15520C / Available from Ford.

MSRP: $33.29 // FTE sponsor: Y2KFORDPARTS.COM price: $17.98.

He's right! I have a 4-speed and it's on the shift tower and I need to replace mine but , getting to it is a different story it looks like there's a access cover I'll have to remove. Looks like a PITA
