Hi guys, so I took my steering wheel off to replace my turn signal switch that was not working. Lights were solid, not flashing. In trying to fish the wires down the steering column I had to remove the shift collar. Putting everything back together, the truck won't start. On, off. On, off. Etc. Finally it would start but only when in Drive, and then Reverse. I'm assuming it's something with the neutral safety switch. But it won't start when in Park, only in gear. I was reading something about a shift collar Pin? Not sure what part this is, and I don't think I removed anything like that. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I'm assuming your truck is '77 or earlier, 78-79 had the switch on the side of the tranny.
The NSS is mounted on the top of the steering column near the firewall. There is a way to adjust it. Put the transmission in neutral, on the switch is a small hole. Use a drill bit, allen wrench, small pin punch, whatever you can find that will fit in the hole.
Loosen the two screws that attach the switch to the column, slide it side to side until you can insert the pin all the way into the switch then tighten the screws.
Sounds like a plan. Thanks, i will give that a try. Yes it is a 1973 F100 Custom, Automatic 2wd. I figured it was something with the Neutral Safety Switch, maybe when I took the column apart something came out of alignment. Just wasn't sure if I somehow lost a pin or something in the column. Thanks for the help.
I've been having the same problem on a '76 for a while now. I have followed the manual's directions for adjusting it with both the original and a new switch. They both come up short of hitting the flag (that positions the switch when the transmission is in it's respective gears) when it's in Neutral and the switch is all the way over in the adjustment slots. I've even taken the whole shifting column apart again to see if I had anything out of alignment, not that I could see. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I know this is an older thread but it was spot on what had happened to me so I figured it would be a good place to start.
You might try checking the linkage adjustment.
Loosen the manual linkage on the arm of the transmission. Put the transmission arm in the neutral position. Check the position of the gearshift lever in the cab, place it in the neutral position. Get back under the truck and tighten the nut on the arm and then check that the gear indicator still shows its in neutral.
Then readjust the NSS.
While you're under the truck, it would be a good idea to check the arm and stud for wear.
Thanks much. I remember making sure that that linkage was lined up correctly when I first had trouble starting after I had installed the turn signal harness but not since then. I bet I'll be able to get that last 1/8" I need for the flag to make contact with the switch.
