I'm doing my 1st oil change and the cap for the oil filter is being difficult. Before I return to my roots and get a chisel and big hammer does anyone have any ideas. I guess if there isn't a better tool available I'll go get a strap wrench. The oils only been changed once (by the dealer) but this thing is tight. Already tried a small hammer and a flat edge against one of the ridges on the top. My sense was that the ridge would be destroyed before the top would turn. Drats, always something.
NEVER MIND I just realized what I was looking at. Boy am I embarrased but before you laugh remember I'm 66 and oil filters are supposaed to be on the bottom of the block down by the pan.
hmmm was thinking this thing is not that hard...but I do remember many days of the hammer and screwdriver to punch a hole in the filter so you can twist it off.
Dealerships and lube centers love to put it on extra tight.
Make sure you get the oil filter and not the fuel filter. I can't tell you how many times I have taken the damn fuel filter off on accident.
I use a strap type device to get mine off every time. the 17mm (if i remember correctly) stripped afte the second time. They also make a tool that goes over the entire thing which is the way to go.
