Urgent.

Hey guys, im in need of some urgent help .. I need a rear drive shaft for my 03 F250 4x4 ! It's a XL reg cab long bed.
Over the last 6years I have snowplowed and added a chip to my truck, and seized up the U-Joint ? not sure ... anyways, long story short, it ended up snapping today on my way to work ...

Cant find one in a wrecking yard here near my home anywhere. talked to a guy and he said he can have it rebuilt and have it to me for around 350.00ish or I can buy a new OE for about 650ish.

anyone have some advice on what course of action I should do ? would a rebuilt one be safe with what I do ? Or just cough up the money and buy a new OE/ aftermarket shaft ?

also If I should be getting a new one, what model or type of shaft do I need ?

thanks all in advance !

Are you sure it is the driveshaft indeed that snapped and not just the U joint? U-Joints are designed to be the weak link in a driveline, because they are inexpensive and easy to replace, so they SHOULD fail before anything else. Check to see if it is indeed the U-Joint that broke rather than the driveshaft. If it is the driveshaft, a reputable person with EXPERIENCE in building driveshafts can fix/rebuilt it fairly easily. They just need to do it correct so it is straight and balanced.

the drive shaft is broken right where the U-Joint meets the shaft it snapped off. so after looking at it, it looks fairly straight luckily and was told fixxing it wouldnt be a bad idea ...

I was just worried about snowplowing with my chip and whatnot and the stress' possible

Did you do a search on car-part.com? I can't imagine that you wouldn't be able to find one using them.

If your need is urgent, you will probably just get the first suitable replacement that comes along.

But there is nothing wrong with a rebuilt. A quality driveline shop can make you one that is better than the OEM unit. Most of those shops really know their stuff. Can't speak for yours of course.

Otherwise, go to the boneyard, pickapart, etc.

well being that my truck is a daily driver I was hoping to find one, or get it rebuilt in a day or 2. Now after talking with a couple of people I see its going to be until tuesday atleast. So now im just looking for a suitable replacement ... If I can find an OE one from a website or something then ill grab it if the price is right ...

Though if rebuilding it isnt much to worry about, and possibly having something better then the OE then to me that sounds like my best option.

Does anyone know the part number or the type of shaft I need ? I was told these trucks use a lot of different variations and if I ordered it from someone I want to know im getting the right part.

You can drive it for a limited amount just using the front driveline. In a pinch.

I just had mine rebuilt today at a driveline shop in New Jersey. 2003 F250 super cab 4X4 158 inch wheelbase. Dealer wanted 1100.00 for rear 2 piece shaft, Dropped it off at 10am picked it up at 3:30 new u-joints, center bearing and new heavy duty slip yoke, my front tube was good he gave me a new rear tube and balanced the whole shaft for 450.00.

If your tubes are in good shape, they usually just burn out the weld, pull the plug, and weld in a new one. Balance it, and you are out the door.

I would think a good driveshaft shop could weld on a new end to your driveshaft.

Go for the rebuild. They will replace the end and balance it, and while doing the balance can tell if the tube is bent. If it is, they can replace that too.

Matter of fact, they can probably just replace the entire thing using your stock one as a guide. Which, for $350 might be what they have in mind

Um.... A YOLK is the yellow part of an egg. They're good scrambled.

A YOKE is what's on the ends of a driveshaft. Also found draped over oxen.

(sorry, the spelling police are beating me over the head tonight... )
