well everyone I thought I would do a little update since it has led to some significant trouble again ...
everything was fixxed for a great cost, driveshaft was rebuilt, (new tube and rear yoke, the front one was burned off the old shaft and welded together) oil change done, new filters the whole bang for about 520.00 ... I did a small fave for the guy who did it in return to hooking me up ... ANYWAYS ... so things were great until lastnight when, while driving I hit a bump (no biggie usually) just before a stop sign. Right after this I heard a noise almost like a baseball card in between spokes of a bike, then when I stopped I pushed the gas to go, and no luck, sounded like the truck was in neutral ... lucky for me I was in a rural area and there was nobody behind me. I fooled around with the transfer case stick shift and it was wierd because putting it in neutral, actually made the truck drive and in 2 wheel ! Anyone have any ideas ?
I looked at a the bushing thinking maybe it was just mangled and rusty but now im lead to believe that due to the driveshaft breaking, when it hit the ground maybe it caused some damage inside the TC ...
i know a salvaged TC is about 1500.00... but maybe rebuilding my current one considering there was no big smash, and the truck still drives ... it must be something small no ? i mean the guy put it on the lift, and tested it, and he can get it in 4L and 2H and neutral .. but the positions on the stick in the cab are screwed up almost ... so currently the truck stick is in N but in 2H
Just sounds like a linkage adjustment. I don't have that model, so I can't be of much help. But it does not sound like an internal problem. Sorry, that's all I got.
well he tried to do it all manually under the truck and it would not pop into where 2H is supposed to be .. but it would go into 2H when he pulled it where N is supposed to be ?
Awesome ! now im wondering how easy its going to be just to do this myself on my day off... I figure once I split the TC ... I'll see whats going on and what exactly is broken in there ... I mean, it cant be much considering the truck will drive still and I can shift in a limited pattern. right now I notice after the guy played with it, it no longer shifts into 2 gears but 4H and 4L ... (4L has the 4x4L light and 4H has no lights or indicatiors on ...)
So I was about to start my faithful teardown tonight, and while i was sprayin some lube on the nuts and bolts ... this is what I found on the Transmission i believe ... right where it connects into the TC ...
Is that the spacer in between the trans and case? If so I have seen those broken in a few trucks, though they were mid 90's trucks. Usually caused by severe vibration or bad mounts.
That is the cast iron piece between the tranny and the t-case which is part of the motor mount so you got lucky. All you need to do is replace it but I don't get the connection with it and the driveshaft unless the vibrations were so bad it cracked it. When you get in there you can address the shifting problem you have also. The bump you hit was probably the coup de gras`.
