1991 F150 4x4 Clutch Replacement

I have a pretty straightforward question, but I had no luck finding any other topics on it.

I have a 1991 F150 4x4 with a 5-speed that I believe the clutch has checked out on. Is it possible to leave the trans and x-fer case in the truck, pull the engine and swap the clutch on the truck outside the truck?

I have some other stuff I'd like to do on the engine, plus I think it would be easier to pull the engine instead of the trans, but I am worried about how difficult it would be line the input shaft on the trans with the clutch on the engine.

Thanks in advance...

Yea you can do it that way, a clutch plate alignment tool is or should be included with the clutch kit.
The tool is needed either you go at it.

Yes you can do it that way. I think pulling the trans and transfer case is less work, but if you are wanting to pull the engine anyway it's a lot easier to install the clutch with the motor on a cherry picker than laying on your back underneath the truck. Just get a good quality replacement - like a Luk.

It's possible, but due to the weight of the engine, it's pretty tough to get the input shaft of the trans to line up with the pilot bushing on the engine. You can't "feel it in" like you can with the trans because you can kind of use your hands on the trans, not so with the motor. Patience will be key.

Done it that way quite a few times and would take that way any time if the engine lifting equipment was at hand.
