I have a 77 f-150 4x4 351m with a 4 speed I am getting ready to pull the motor and was wondering would be best to unbolt engine from bell housing or bell from trans. ( the clutch is stuck) This might be a stupid ? but I have never had to pull a engine that was bolted to a 4speed on auto trans.
Drop the transmission on the ground first. I think it's a pain to reassemble with a manual transmission in place because of the seven inch input shaft.
I have unstuck tractor clutchs before by someone holding down the pedal and prying them away from the flywheel through an inspection plate, usually takes very little effort. I cant remember if the bell housing has a removable cover on the bottom or not? If so, try it.
Is the clutch problem the reason for pulling the engine? If so don't bother. Clutches are generally handled by pulling the transmission. It's less work. However, if you have engine issues to address at the same time then carry on.
I got the engine out. I was pulling it becouse we are going to fix this truck up for my 13yr old son for his first truck we bought the truck with a stuck clutch and I wanted to pull the motor and trans so we can go through the motor and clean and paint the frame before we do the body work.
I just yanked mine out all by my self... unbolted the 4 bolts on the trans and poped it right out... putting it back in took 3 people but was just as easy I have a 400 so we have the same size block etc
