I bought a 2000Exp used and never realized the lights wern't working right. Unfortunately there's a lot more than the lights and a switch. I can't get mine to turn off at night while the truck is running, and I can't get my fog lights to work. The switch seems to be working just not properly. I'm just afraid there's something else causing the problem. Any suggestions on what it is and how to diagonse it?
I can tell you how things work on the used 2000 Expy I just purchased...
The headlights don't totally shut off at night, because I have daytime running lamps. As a result they are always on, but they are dimmer than regular low beam.
My foglights will only come on if the headlight switch is in the 'on' position. I have to turn the headlights on, then pull the switch out to turn on the fogs. Somewhere I did see a write-up for a mod to change the switch so that the fogs could be turned on independently.
Thanks, Thats how mine are supposed to work however I don't think the lights are dimmer during the day and I can't turn them off at night with the engine running, even in park. The fog light switch works the same as yours but the fogs don't come on at all. The indicator next to the switch lights up so I have a feeling it's something other than the switch. I just hate to take it to the dealer for such a little thing. I'm sure the'll rip me off.
I just went out to the garage to make sure I got this right (and yes, my truck is a Canadian one, which means it is equipped with Daytime Running Lights - DRLs). Mine is a 2000 XLT.
Day or night, the headlights function as DRLs, they are on and cannot be turned off. Even putting on the park brake does not turn them off. The DRLs are slightly dimmer than low beam, but not by much. Only way to turn 'em off is to turn the truck off. At night I turn the lights on, and that gives me markers, dash lights, and regular low beam. It sounds to me like your headlights are working the same as mine.
As for the fogs, though ... if you pull the switch when it is in the on position and the fogs do not come on, that does sound like something is hooped. Maybe the fogs are on their own fuse and that is blown? Or maybe both are burnt out (but that would be pretty wierd).
