Howard, if I remember correctly (been a while since I have removed these switches) there is a slot in the light switch body, stick a screwdriver in there, and jiggle it around, while pulling the **** out, it should disengage the shaft, allowing it to come out.

From 1945 Operator's Manual:

HEAD LAMP SWITCH REPLACEMENT

a. Removal. Remove the small cap screw which connects the throttle rod to the throttle control button shaft between the instrument panel and the dash. Remove the throttle control button and shaft. Make sure that the head lamp **** is all the way in. Insert a small screwdriver in the slot in the switch, and twist the screwdriver to compress the spring. While holding the spring compressed, turn the head lamp switch **** one-quarter turn to the left and remove the **** and insert from the switch. Using a screwdriver with a wide blade, remove the nut which holds the switch to the instrument panel, and push the switch out of the panel. Disconnect the switch wires at the bullet connections.

b. Installation. Connect the switch wires at the bullet connections. Place the switch in position on the instrument panel, and secure it with the nut. Hold the switch **** with the L turned one-quarter turn to the left. Push the **** insert into the switch and, while pressing in on the ****, turn it one-quarter to the right to secure it to the switch. Place the throttle control button in the instrument panel. Install the small cap screw in the throttle shaft to connect it to the throttle rod.

The above assumes that everything is Henry Ford original. Most after-market replacement switches have a small stamped sheetmetal button that is pressed into the switch to compress the spring allowing the **** and insert to be removed.

it is Ford original. Thank you both for the advise. I'm going to try it this afternoon, but I can't get the switch to pull out or push in, so I hope it works. I guess if it doesn't then I will just have to cut it off.
