Dome Light and Cargo Light

Hey all, well another little problem that came with my truck.

When I open either door none of the lights come on. I know the bulbs aren't burned out because I can wiggle the little push button switch and sometime I can get the interior lights/cargo light to come on and sometimes I can't. Another weird side of this is when I open my drivers door the beeper works. So it may not be the switch.

I pulled on of the switches off and saw it was just a push button switch that has a little harness on it. Is this most likely the problem? Where can I find 2 more of these switches? Why would both of them go bad like that?

Thanks,

Derrick

switches can be bough from autozone, just ask them for a door switch at the counter.

not sure if its your problem though, I'm experiencing similar issues. My passenger side switch turns on the dome and cargo light, but the driver's doesn't.

The weird thing is, if I leave my headlights on and open up my driver's side door, the buzzer buzzes to let me know my lights are on. So I know the switch works, but its just not turning on the lights.

Also, to make sure your lights work, turn your headlight **** all the way to the left (counterclockwise) and see if they both turn on.

Good luck!

Mine is doing the same thing. If I open my door the beeper beeps if my key is in the ignition. So the switches are working somewhat.

It is pouring rain now so I don't wanna go out to the truck and double check this but I have turned the **** all the way in both directions and haven't gotten the lights to come on. Do you have to click in past the full counterclockwise position? I didn't force it that hard. I have gotten the lights to come on once before when the door was open and when it came on the dome light was on, the lights in the doors were on, and the cargo light was on.

you should be able to turn the **** counterclockwise to dim your dash lights, after they go all the way dark, you will turn a little more and it will kinda click, that should turn on your dome with the door open or closed

OK. When I was trying to get my dome lights to come on that way I was turning it all the way to brighten the dash lights not dim them. I was thinking that they would turn on after the all the way bright position like my friends Chevy Impala. Guess Ford did it the opposite of GM. I will try that as soon as this rain stops. It is still pouring.

That part of the light switch is a known failure point, the wire coil warped around the insulator and the shoe that rides on it.
Once the spring goes it takes out the shoe, does it feel funny when you turn it? grating and or rough when turned yet fairly easy to rotate. if so that might be why the lights do not work when rotating the switch fully counter clockwise and probably explains the "click" you feel turning it fully clockwise. Shouldn't be any click once rotated fully clockwise, should just stop.

I got tired of replacing the switch in my 94 and connected the dash lights directly into the running light circuit behind the switch. No more dimmer but never really used it anyway.

Seams a common thread here too, cargo and dome light won't come on with the drivers door but do with the passengers side door.
Dome/cargo light worked like that when I bought the truck (they did work with a fully functioning main switch), just not with the drivers door but never bothered me enough to find out why.
Still works with the P side door but that part of the main switch is gone.

Used to be Ford provided a separate switch on the dash for the cargo light, now we gotta leave a door hang open while in use.

Ok, I'm now sitting in the truck. When I turn the simmer switch all the way counterclockwise all the lights come on. The dome, cargo, and door lights, they all work. On my truck turning the switch counterclockwise brightens the dash, clockwise dims the dash. As far as when opening the doors, when I open either door the lights don't come on but when I open the drivers door the beeper comes on so the door switch is working. This is a very strange problem.

Now, i could very well be wrong here, but what i've seen on other vehicles is a door switch with 3 wires. It seems sometimes they separate the key-in-ignition warning from the lights. Since the lights draw a bit of power, it could be that the contacts are burnt.

I would pull the switch and see, and if its not more than a few $, might just try replacing and see what happens.

I'm not a mechanic, but this is what i'd do on my truck..

Hmmm, I didn't think about the key in ignition being a seperate wire. I will pull off the switch and look. If it indeed is a 3 wire switch then I will replace the switches when I get my next paycheck on Wed.

Yes the drivers door switch has three wires to it, the switch does utilize dual contacts.

LT GRN - YEL = Power

BLK - LT BLU = Ground

RED - PINK = Warning chime

I had to replace the cab wire harness cause the moisture damaged it under the floor mat. Only driver door wouldn't turn on dome light but turn on lights or open passenger door and the buzzer would work. Also if i turned on dome light manually the buzzer started to buzz. Replace or repair green wires to correct the issue.
