Hello all. My name is Randall. I am new to the forum and I thought I would stop in and say Hi. I bought a 2001 F250 Supercab Longbed. It has the 7.3L Powerstroke. I purchased the vehicle from Dick and Mike Baily Motors in Okmulgee, OK. I will NEVER return to them. The salesman John was straight forward, answered all my questions, even put up with my wife and kids while I took the truck for a test drive. BUT, the management and mechanics leave a LOT to be desired. They had my newly purchased truck in the shop to put on a set of wiper blades, it took them 30 minutes to do what I could have done in 3. I checked the oil and found that it was 2 gallons low. It was full when it went in. I checked it myself. Now, tell me, what is the point of draining 2 gallons of oil? I know it didn't burn that much in the time it took to go around the block and then into the shop. There certainly wasn't a leak that bad, a blind man would have seen that. Overall, I would buy from John again, but not from the dealership he works for.
I changed the oil Friday night at 11:00 PM. I had nothing better to do. I used Ford Motorcraft 15W40, Fram ToughGuard filter, and Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Any suggestions on further maintenance or corrections to the way I already do things?
Welcome to FTE. I'd skip the Lucas next time. In general, oil additives are not that great of an idea on the 7.3. Between the high shear in the HPOP, the excessive oil temps in the turbo, and the fact the injectors run off engine oil, it's best to just use the right oil.
2 gallons is a lot of oil. I'd crawl on top of the motor just to be safe and make sure you don't have a big puddle of oil in between the heads. If you have a bad o-ring up top it can leak a bunch of oil, but it sits on top of the motor until you park at just the right angle and dump it all.
Go ahead and inspect the air filter. Make sure the filter is clean, the lid clamps down on the box properly (no broken tabs or warped box) and inspect the inside of the tube going back to the turbo to make sure there's no dirt inside the tube. Also get some test strips and check the coolant if you have the green kind. The green coolant requires SCA every once in a while.
From now on, come on here and ask questions before you do anything to your truck. These guys on here will steer you in the right direction. Like Chris said, don't put any additives in the oil.
Welcome aboard and the guys have you headed in the right direction. Maybe they changed the oil for you and only put 6qts in being unfamilar with the 7.3. Amost half of that went in the filter. Just a thought, but sounds better than loosing 2 gals on a short drive.
Welcome! Glad to have you here. You've bought a great truck. I hope you meant 2 quarts low instead of 2 gallons. I agree with zx250, they might have changed the oil filter. It holds 2 quarts.
I would also change the filter in the fuel/water separator bowl (it's on top of the engine just under the powerstroke engine cover). You don't know how long it's been there, and once it gets gummed up, power goes down.
Other than that, there's plenty to search about (mods, maintenance, etc.) and plenty of info flying around. Enjoy!
Ladies and gents I said exactly what I meant with 2 GALLONS low. Thanks for the tip with the additives, I will be changing the oil again soon anyhow. This was a preventive measure that I used on my Freightliner when I still drove a semi. The funny thing is that it says on the bottle that it's pretty much made for the Powerstroke diesel. Any recommendations on what type of oil I should use and where I can get it? I appreciate all assistance. The only diesel engine I have ever run is the P.O.S. Freightliner puts in their trucks. I don't even remember what it was, just that it was made by Daimler Chrysler. Thanks for the welcomes and if anyone finds themselves in central Oklahoma, let me know.
On another note, I checked the oil again today, absolutely no change in 300 miles now since i changed the oil. Oh, if anyone can tell my why my baby smokes and why the blasted SES light comes on intermittantly, please let me know. A new developement is the ABS light comes on as well and the cruise no longer works. I'm not mad, she still runs great, but I want my baby to be running smoothe as silk, and looking as sharp as a razor.
