Hey all, I've posted this in a couple other spots, but figured here was a good place to pose this question too.
I'm planning out a new Ford project and would like to do a column shift, but have never worked with them before. Ideally I'd like to hook up a warmed over 302 with some sort of OD manual tranny.
Does anybody know my options, or have familiarity with column shift manuals?
Best option is a three speed and a cable or electrically shifted OD. These were available in F100s in the late 60s/early 70s. Chances are if you find an old Ranger package truck with a column shift, it'll have the OD as well.
Any linkage will have to be fully custom. The factory linkages tend to be pretty worn out by this point, anyways.
Outside of maybe some IH trucks (I was told once about one with 5 on the tree) American column shifts were 3 speeds.
Europeans had 4 on the tree.
If you find a 3 speed with an OD on the tail, you would be good to go. If you get one of those 4 speed OD transmissions, and I can't really recommend them, you can column shift it, but will have to remember to put in in neutral, and then shift it into reverse with another lever. How's that for a pita?
I know the AOD would be the easy (and generic) way to go. And in an A body saving leg room is a premium, so I'll have to keep it a consideration. I've just always enjoyed manuals and think having one on the tree would make the project unique. If I can figure out a way to do it, then that's what I want to do...so I thought I'd see who knows what.
Thanks again for your input. I'll be checking into "Ranger" models.
