brake dust

hey,
i just got new brakes on my pickup, and since theyre still wearing in they are creating alot of brake dust (you know, until they get a glaze on them, breaking in and such) and since i have MAG wheels its getting all over them, and you cant even tell they are aluminum, they look like black stock wheels! any tips on how to clean this off without leaving the oily residue most heavy cleaners do? oh, one other thing....do you all use ArmorAll on your interior? i like it and all, but the dust collects onto it so bad, its almost better just to leave it rather than using the ArmorAll.....any other products that don't do this? or something i can wipe it down with once i have applied it? thanks again

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Feb-02 AT 01:55 AM (EST)]Are they MAGS(magnesium)or are they clear-coated aluminum? If they are you can use Westley'stm bleche white wheel cleaner. Or you can use brightening acid. If they are raw aluminum, you can use these things, but you will need to polish again. Better to just scrub them.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Feb-02 AT 01:52 AM (EST)]BTW-Armor all is a nasty trap.(you'll feel like you need to keep using it like an addict just to get it to look decent) Save it for the tires. Just use a damp cloth to remove dust, and keep your vinyl out of direct sunlight if possible. The low gloss armor all is less apt to trap dust, but eventually armor all will discolor plastics, and make some vinyls look like cheap shoes. Just my opinion. I hate the stuff.

Yeah 303 protectant works great, its a little pricey but its worth it, it still gives the shine armor all does but with out the greasy feeling, and it doesnt collect dust. not to mention it lasts a whole lot longer.

brake dust

hey,
thanks for the info. um, i don't know if they are magnesium or aluminum.....don't really look like aluminum to me, but then again i dont really know. i think what im gonna try is just scrubbing them down real good, and maybe wiping them with some kind of solvent, and then add some kind of protecrant for shine. thanks again for the ideas!

trueblue_79, thank you for this topic, because of you I have found another alternative to Goat Milk(ArmorAll). Fordatlast, Cowboy351, I am going to try that 303, ArmorAll and me just don't get along. Thanks again fellas! Oh, and trueblue, get some pictures of your honey(Your TRUCK,It's not quite that kind of site) in that gallery of yours.

Heck I'm lazy about all kinds of specialty stuff. I just mainly wipe down with a soft damp cloth and let it go. But don't get me wrong I think some of the products work well but I live in the country and it is hopeless to keep the dust off. I do agree with the others about Amor-all though. Don't like it!!! I have a dash cover on my dash that just needs an occassional vacumning!!!!

Hey! Right on man! She's a beauty! Nice straight body.
I do think that some brightening acid will make those wheels look like a new penny!

hey,
thanks for the comment. I scrubbed my wheels down with just a wet rag and light car soap (the turtle wax soap) and it got them pretty clean except for a few spots of tar covered with brake dust. i will have to pick up some of this 303 protectorant! i found a decent product at the local wal mart actually, its made by Penzoil, comes in abottle just like armorall, and dosent leave the residue, just a nice clean feeling. at least so far anyways

Armorall Quicksilver II works great on brake dust.

Try using WD 40 on your dash and vinyl. Just takes a little and is much cheaper, cuts oil and grease too. This is probably the only thing WD-40 is really good at.

Just thought i might add this...
I have a 92 Pontiac GTA and over on the F body websites i have have read that some members in the colder climates have used armor all and their dasshboards have cracked ....seems like it has a lot of water in its base make up.
I never have had this happen to me but it was enough to not buy it anymore... just my .02
