let me start by saying me trannys are NOT my fortey...
I have a 2000 350 7.3 4x4 auto with 130k miles
the truck has been good, no tranny issuse whatsoever, no slips, no heat, nuthin.
the other day, i backed out of a parking spot, put into "D" and nuthin. just reved like was in neutral. i put it back up in "N" and did it again, it engaged into drive and drove fine. got home scanned for codes and found nuthin. yesturday, as i was leaving the house, it happened again, and i could not get it to engage. if i put it in drive, it reved up and moved a little bit. ran through all the other gears, 1st,2nd,reverse. all ran fine. again no codes, fluid level is correct, not burnt. this morning i tried again and "walla" no problems, truck seems to drive normal. I have only driven it down the road and back about a mile, but smooth shifts, engages everytime, etc....any one have this happen before? i dont want to have a full rebuild, but what might it be????? and how can i figure it out? all tranny shops say, "REBUILD"
When was the last time the fluid and filter was changed? It almost sounds like a little piece of trash worked its way into the valvebody and hung one of the valves momentarily.
Could be the position sensor or VB issue -- worth looking at since you're looking at several grand as an alternative. You might think about getting a TransGo shift kit -- it forces you to tear the VB apart and clean it all out. Of course the risk is that if it *is* a trans issue, you're wasting ~$75 to $100 on a kit. Or not -- give the trans rebuilder the kit and maybe they'll cut you a bit of a break on some parts.
No tranny expert in any sense of the word but I would change out the fluid and filter, or just get a tranny flush. When was the last time it was changed?? When in doubt, change it..

Not a waste as long as the rebuilder knows it's there and uses the parts, instead of substituting their own. THere are some parts that have to be installed wth the trans out anyway, so you can give them those parts.
