Another EGT question/concern

I have a 2000 4door longbed F350 with the diesel(obviously) and was towing my explorer down the interstate around 80 today and on some of the hills my egt was in the 1000-1100 range for quite a while.

What egt can the 7.3 run for 5-10 min at a time without damage. I have the egt probe off the drivers rear cylinder in the uppipe like most of you do. Why I ask is the concern that when I got to where I was going, the tailpipe was smokey with oil smoke. Now I have not yet done the ccv mod, so could that be the issue.

Thanks guys.

Those temps are fine for extended driving times. 1250 degrees is the "redline" for EGT's, and most people try to stay at 1200 or less for extended periods. So you were well under that.

If you do have oil out the tailpipe, you might be having early signs of turbo trouble.

No oil just smoke that smelled like oil. And real cloudy.
I've dealt with turbo gas engines a bunch but was just curoius if not having the ccv mod done, would cause the oil burning smoke. I checked oil level and it's the same as 300 miles ago. I'll check turbo shaft play tomorrow I guess and maybe do a dirty ccv mod for now. I gotta drive to englishtown this weekend for the all ford races and swapmeet so the truck needs to be good to go or else I'll have to take the mustang and not buy anything.

No oil out the tailpipe, but the turbo is boned.
The side/side play is minimal (does not hit the housings) but there is about a half inch of play in the in/out.
I need a new turbo; I may be able to rebuild this one, but it seems like even though the blades do not touch the housing that there is too much of a gap.

Im assuming that I had compound problems here. I think my couplers were bad and leaking and I had disconnected the wg reference line from the actuator, and the turbo over-rev'd and died.

Yeah, you found your problem, for sure!
I'm surprised you didn't hear the ringing sound of the wheels rubbing the housing.

Ive had turbos on my gas engines go bad and could hear the wheel rubbing, but this one I did not.

I really need to get some new couplers before I put on the new turbo for sure.

When you say 1250 is redline, is that reading after the turbo, or at the exhaust manifold?

At the exhaust manifolds.

Never put a probe after the turbo. It makes the gauge 100% completely useless for tracking EGT's.

With a post-turbo pyro, your pistons could be doing this , and all the while, your gauge looks like this . After a while, your engine will do this , leaving you and

That's how it works, in a nutshell

HAHAHA. A picture is worth a thousand words, and while you had a lot to say, it was a fast read. EVERYONE can read pictures, and i had a quick laugh over your explination.

I was thinking about putting a second egt in my passenger side manifold, to compare how each bank was running, but not sure if it would be worth it. I just like to overcomplicate things sometimes i guess, but safety is a big concern of mine.
