I have a 97 F150 Lariat with power mirrors. I have had it since new (13+ years now), but about 3 or so years ago the mailman hit the side mirror with his bag on a very cold day and the mirror glass cracked. It hasn't really bothered me that much, but the rest of the truck is near perfect so I thought I would fix it. A couple of years back I picked up a complete used replacement assembly from a wrecker, but I would like to just replace the glass if I can.
I have checked through all of the threads on this site and they all seem to deal with removing the whole assembly.
I was told by a former Ford mechanic that you can just grip the edges of the glass and pull the glass out and stick the new glass in, but I can't see how to do this and don't want to break something else.
Anyone know how to do this? Can you give me a simple step by step?
Do not just grab the edges of the glass. It will break!
I turned the glass as far as I could and used a flat carpenters pry-bar...believe it or not...lol
You have to get something behind it to pull it off the little plastic ***** that snap into the back of the mirror.
I removed both sides and replaced them with turn-signal mirrors.
I did remove the hole assembly and did the work on my counter top. With heavy gloves and safety glasses.
When I bought my 01 Lariat, the driver's side mirror glass was cracked and i was told by the Ford dealer....new complete assembly. No way I told them.
So I went to a local glass company...Tri County Glass in Batesville MS and asked the owner if he had any ideas on replacement. He went inside and came out with a thick catalog of side mirrors for vehicles. Low and behold, he found one for mine, ordered it and installed it all for 10 bucks. The replacement is just a tad smaller overall than original or otherwise...it wouldn't go in the housing.
Napa, Autozone, and Carquest don't have a listing for these mirrors. It seems like they're a one year only kinda deal. I haven't compared them to any other trucks of the same body style, but there must be some slight difference?
Well, I've called every glass place in town. Evidently, power mirrors without the heat or signal are very uncommon. Only one place has the glass, and it's $57 installed. I have my doubts as to whether they looked up the right part though since nobody else carries it. Signal mirrors would be a nice upgrade, but I need tires before upgrading or adding anything else.
i think i'll visit some junkyards this weekend.
Well, 1st of all, $57 dodes not sound too bad for a replacement mirror. the link below is what we sell at our company warehouse. PPG Autoglass is now PGW Autoglass where I work.

$57 was just for the mirror glass. That sounds high compared to the $10 precut mirror glass I see at Napa, Carquest, etc...
That site has some dead links, or my firewall here at work is doing something funny. I'll give them a call.
A side question. Does anyone know if all doors have wiring for the signal and heated mirrors? If I found a set, could I install them and just plug them in?

My truck, and so should yours, had the wiring to the plug in the door for signal mirrors but not for the heated mirrors.
I had to buy a whole used assembly just to get the glass. Even at that it took some time. A relative has one of the largest salvage yards in the Province. I put in an order for one just after it was broken and waited nearly 2 years for one to turn up. I have been holding onto it ever since. Sorry I can't provide another.
