Pyrometer Help

Should a EGT guage show some temparature right away? I installed my Autometer Lunar series Pyro tonight, with the thermal couple mounted in the the drivers side exhaust manifold. I have the thermal wires routed properly and the all the 12v connections wired - and the back light is working correctly. But the temp guage stays at 0....I ran the truck for about 10 minutes and nothing. Does it take a while to actually warm up the EGT's or do I have a problem?

Also - when the guage came out of the box, it was pegged at 1600, but as soon as I hooked up the 12v main connection it bumped over to 0.

Any thoughts or does it need to run longer before the temps come up?

Great....not what I wanted to hear. Are these things brand specific or can I swap out another guage to see if my problem is in the guage? Any ideas for troubleshooting. If I disconnect the thermal leads, can I use a multimeter to test for anything such as resistance, etc..? I bought this guage NIB off ebay over a year ago so I am stuck with it.

Sounds like to me the thermal couple is bad.... IIRC there is only the one wire from te thermo couple to the gauge. All it does is read resistance and at higher temps has more resistance. Make sure the wires are on the correct posts on the gauge... There are what 3 and then two for the light?

A ground does need to be strong, if not it will not work either...

I just looked it up... Two wiresto the thermo coulpe. Does not matter which ones go to which on the thermo coulpe because it's just measuring resistance... But you really have to make sure it's a strong ground, becasue other wise it will not work...

That's where I would start... Alsomake sure it is infact getting 12v with a multi meter.

I will check the ground. The thermal couple does have two wires. There are two 12v sources for this guage - one for the backlighting which is fine, and one for the guage itself. I used the same ground for both sources, which is the same ground for my boost guage light. So hopefully that is the culprit.

My EGT shows ambient temp when it hot enough outside.
Autometer had a bad batch of thermocouples. Give them a call, they will send a new, updated version. BTW: be sure not to be too rough on it. Dropping/bumping it can destroy it. The thermocouple actually generates a very small voltage (mV) that needs to be amplified for the gauge to use.

One quick trip you can try if your careful is take the probe out, turn on the key (truck not running) take a propane torch and gently swish the flame back and forth across the probe while having someone watch the gauge, once it's good and hot ground it out and see what it reads. I have seen several that needed a jump start the first time to get them to work... seems they stick?? or need a little help......

if your wires from the thermo coupler are on back wards on the guage they will read backwards. Which in your case will cause it to show no temp,... might want to recheck the connections

Got it fixed last night....it was the ground and 12v source for the main power as suggested. Pulled a new wire from the battery and drilled my own good ground under the interior panel - and presto.

Towing my car next weekend for 100 miles, so it will be good knowing if my truck runs in acceptable temps or I have been living on the edge
