The key doesn't get programmed, the PATS computer is programmed to accept the key ID. If the key quits working but other keys work, the key is damaged in some manner, and the computer can't read it.The key does nothing but allow it's ID code to be read. That's why it's called PASSIVE Anti Theft System. There is little to go wrong with the keys themselves, and are pretty reliable. I have heard of literally no key failures where the key was physically undamaged.
I know how the system works. We severvice 50-60 cars a day we sell keys by the hundreds. All i am saying is that we have never have a problem witha ford key. We have had problems with aftermarket keys. It might be less than 10% but when you work on thoughsands of cars a year you see things. A person buying 10 keys in there lifetime more than likely will never have a problem. I don't care where you get your keys i am just trying to be helpful. I thought that the $140 dealer price was crazy considering that we are a dealer and do it for half as much.
