Hi Guys, I know this has probably been beat to death, but need some answers from the crew here....Traded my 97 for an 07 last weekend.I got three keys, two are the older type square Ford key. These fit the doors, tailgate etc.One is the PATS key.Needless to say only the one PATS key will crank the truck.
Ive been in touch with the local Ford dealership, and its gonna be 140.00 to get a second one programmed, and cut.
Ive done some research on programming an additional PATS key,and its easy to make a third one IF you have two originals(supposedly) BUT if you only have one PATS key,its gotta go to the dealer......
I can afford to go that route, but wonder if there is any other recourse that will be less expensive?
Also just bought an 07 after having a 97 for years. Luckily I got both keys with it, though I almost didn't (they had to hunt for the 2d one). I heard the same thing from a dealer, if you don't have 2 then there's no way to get another operational key outside of the dealer. Once you have a pair of operational keys, then you can program something like 4 more. I got 2 more to be safe and programmed them both per the manual.
Sorry but you're going to have to pay the dealer to get another one, I have not heard of any other options.

Thanks Paul...kinda figured this was the case. The slaesman has contacted the previous owner, and he is SUPPOSED to drop by sometime this weekend, and drop off the second key,and owners manual.Ill keep my fingers crossed.
Concerning the 97,mine never let me down once. She hauled twice she was supposed to,and ran like a top.Ill miss it,but if the 07 performs as well as the 97,This will be the last truck ill ever buy.
If and when you get the 2nd key immediately, if not now, order a couple of blanks from a dealer on E-bay. $9.99 ea. ( http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Transpon...34Q2ec0Q2em322 ) Get them cut and then program them yourself. With 4 keys to your vehicle you will always have the 2 necessary to program another if you lose one while leaving one with a trusted friend who can bring it to you when you get locked out or have lost your key when away from home. Your friend can also overnight the spare to you should you get stranded when out of town. As I have Four Fords with the PATS system I keep two spare uncut blanks on hand just in case. When you add it all up the extra keys (10 in all) are still cheaper than getting just one from the dealer.
If you cannot get the second key, check with a locksmith as many of them will be able to help you. I have a friend who got a quote of $125 from the dealer; the locksmith came to his house, programmed and cut the 2nd PATS key for $65. Check around..........

I hear you on the 97. Once in 10 years was it no start and that was due to a bad load of gas, one time and one time only. Other than maintenance stuff, total replacements was an alternator, turnsignal switch, 2 plug wires and fix one tail light. In addition to getting 16.5-18 mpg around town and 20 on the highway. If I could have guaranteed it would have lasted another 15 years I wouldn't have gotten the 07. I have to admit the 07 is nice, just hopes it lives up the legacy of the 97. Going to hate selling that one but I can't afford to keep 2 trucks around for long.
As far as keys go, I got a pair at one of the local Ford Dealers cut and ready to program for $65 for the pair. Ironically that dealership was less than other dealers or locksmiths. All I had to do was go through the programming sequence as laid out in the manual.

Shorebird, Thanks for the link.Ordered two this morning. If all goes well the previous owner will bring the second OEM key to my salesman today.I can then have my spare two cut,and program them myself.Worst case scenerio Ill have to take my two new keys to Ford, and have them cut/program them, but at least wont have to pay their 40.00 key price!
If you bought the vehicle from the dealer, they should man up and furnish the second key. If you got just one from the dealer, they sold you a semi-inoperative PATS system. (Your PATS system is not totally functional). We went through this when my wife bought her Escape. Dealer had no problem furnishing second key. It's called customer service. Raise He!!.

Yeah..I hear ya. Unfortunately, the 07 was on the used lot at a local Nissan dealership. My original plan was to look into a new Frontier and use the C4C program in trading in the 97 F-150.While i was NEVER impressed with the idea of getting away from Ford,I figured the 97 would never be worth more than the 4500.00.
The dealership had three Frontiers, none of which had the equipment I wanted.
I saw the 07 on the used lot,and my mind was immediately made up.If this was a Ford dealership,I woule raise Hell, but considering the circumstances,In all good consience Ive gotta cut these guys some slack.I talked them down, and got more for the 97 than expected to boot....
Look for a different dealer. We sell pats keys for $25 and probram for $35. I will say one thing we have seen problens with aftermarket pats keys. We sell our oem keys for $13 over the counter

I've purchased somewhere around 20 PATS keys from E-bay dealers. I have never had a problem with any of them. You say that you have had problems with aftermarket keys. Just what sort of problems? Where are you that you sell the keys for $13?

where is this? I've been quoted $60 for the F-150 keys from a Dealership out here
as I previously mentioned, I ran eBay keys for years. Not a single issue. There are some sellers on eBay who sell OEM keys though.
My local Ford Dealership quoted me 140.00 for an additional key...40 for the key,100 for the "programming".I found a couple of new PATS keys(thanks to this website) for 9.99 each. I ordered two.At least if the previous owner doesent show up with the second key,Ill come out ahead..
