85 tailgate

I currently have a repro tailgate on my 85 that doesnt close right. I have located a mint tailgate from a 1980 model. I know the latches and cables are different but my question is can I use the basic shell? In other words can I swap my 85 latches and cables onto the 80 tailgate shell? Thanks!
