So, I know the tailgate sucks and almost everyone has some problem or another with theirs.
Mine has to do with the window and latching mechanism. First, my window does not roll up or down unless I slam the gate hard. I am a big guy, and I have to give it just about everything I have sometimes for it to work. Any thoughts on what I need to replace?
My other problem is the latch. The rod that attaches to the inner handle is hyper-extended and does not work the latch anymore. Where can I order another one of these? All the bone yards near me will not part out tailgates.
Lastly, how much does it cost on average to have the tailgate shell replaced?
First, What year truck are we talking about here.
Also jeffs broncograveyard sells individual parts for tailgates and new shells, or do you mean the bottom skin?
i bought a tailgate shell recently for 236.00 i had to look but i found a local shop that got one from overseas that fits broncos from years 87-93. Get the phone book out and start calling local body shops and u might get lucky like i did.
I know th problem you are talking about with slamming of the tailgate to get the window to work. What I usually do is take can of WD-40 to the pivoting latches on the side of the tailgate, and spray the hell out of them and clean them up. The keep pushing them closed and popping them open again (need to use the gate handle to unlock them). I usually get it working perfectly after a few minutes of this.
There is a "safety" switch on the insde - left of the tailgate by the latch. If the tailgate isn't "latched" completely, it will not allow the window to go up or down. Either the switch is going, or the more likely problem, the bushing that goes around the latch strike, (attached to the truck fender, looks like a large smooth bolt), is worn or gone. You can get both from www.broncograveyard.com
Both are cheap and easy to replace, the bushing being the easiest. Some people have just bypassed the safety switch and for most that would work. But I never liked the thought of my kid getting in the front and hitting the window switch while I have the tailgate open.
As for the rod going to the inside latch, you can try www.lmctruck.com. (Oh I'm gonna get slapped for that one).
