My 04 F-250 has just developed a new problem that I would like to run by you. I have searched the forums for symptoms of injector problems and came across this thread. Yesterday, out of the blue, my truck started to "miss" or run rough and idle like it had a dead cylinder or two. Once I got going and got the engine to rev it seemed to pull with power and run smooth. It felt like a leaking injector that would be OK when more fuel was needed. No CEL came on. It actually went away for a while then came back again. Is this classic injector failure? How can I locate it if so. Truck has 130K so no warranty. I would like to do the repairs if there are no special(expensive) tools required.
thanks for any advice.
The first order of business would be to remove the EGR valve and see what it looked like. Do you have any mods? What is your maintenance history?
Bought the truck used with 123K. Seemed to run fine. Completely stock engine except I have added a Racor 4500 CCV filter (used 1"hose). 6" lift and 33" bfg's on 18' Pro Comp wheels. 2WD with 3.73 ratio. One note; I have been running approx. B50 mix of biodiesel. I have only been driving the truck for 7000 miles and all is good. Then, two days before the Symptoms appeared I almost ran out of gas, down to fumes, and I filled up with straight diesel. 38.2 gallons in fact, at a Union 76.
The truck was totally warmed up for hours when it started to run rough as if missing or an injector problem. Thing is I don't really know the symptoms as I am new to the diesel world.
Slowing down or stopping was very bad and I thought it would stall. If I sloooowly accelerated it would pick up speed/power then it really started
to pull very smoothly when I kept the pedal down.
Could the fuel change cause an injector problem, perhaps with one that was weak already?
I will pull the egr and check it tomorrow. Am I checking to see if it is stuck open?
Also, less than 4000K miles on the fuel filters. Thanks again for any advice.
Fuel starvation is a DEATH SENTENCE for 6.0 injectors.
There has been enough noise about it around here in the nearly 3 years that I've been here that I recently ammended how I "read" the fuel gauge. It now reads in 1/3-tank intervals. When it gets to the "normal" 1/4 mark, that's the new "empty", and I start heading for the fuel station.
yep starving injectors for fuel is probably the fastest way to kill the injectors. as far as the egr you want to make sure it is clean of all soot and that it is not stuck open. if you look in the tech folder there is a great write up on how to remove and clean the egr
My truck is still in the shop repairing the mess the gas in the diesel tank caused they replaced the #1&4 injectors and got the truck up and running and #6 injector failed the insurance co will not replace the 5 remaining injectors unless they fail.the service tech told the adjuster that the remaining injector could fail at any time from lack of lubrication from the gas.Over the weekend i attended the all truck event in carlisle pa and ford had a large diesel display set up with all the cutaway power stroke motors on display and the ford power stroke engineers wear on hand thy told me that all the injectors should be replaced that they may be scored from lack of lubrication .Can someone send me a service bulletin on oil starvation of the injectors so i can show the insurance co.In September I'm racing in sebring fl and it makes me nervous to toe a 18,000 pound forty foot trailer that far with iffy injectors.Help
OK, pulled the egr. Dry but caked pretty well with carbon/soot. It is closed at least to my eye. I will clean and get new 0-rings and gasket kit. Kinda disappointed because it feels like this will go in an expensive direction.
I would appreciate any advice on the next troubleshoot step . Thinking of draining some fuel and refilling with biodiesel for the old B50 mix the truck seemed to like.
I tried to attach some pictures to this reply.
I also included a picture of my CCV mod, (the only one I've done so far).
Thanks, Dana
