What sensor is that???? ( hopefully post in the right forum now)

<TABLE width="100%" border=0 itxtvisited="1"><TBODY itxtvisited="1"><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD vAlign=top width="100%" itxtvisited="1">Hello,
I have a 1999 Ford F-250 superduty with the 7.3 Powerstroke deisel. I purchased it 3 weeks ago and had nothing but bad luck with the electrical. Ive already replaced the cam sensor in front of the motor. It seems I have alot of sensors unplugged and I have been plugging them back in as I find them. I happen to find one that is plugged in at the base of the turbo. I plugged it in and my truck immediatly started running like it had no power or on a couple cylinders. I am assuming the sensor is bad. But it runs fine unplugged. What sensor is it, and whats it for? Also when I was driving home after i bought it (about a 2 hour drive) the cruise control cut out but the whole truck stalled for just an instant and all the dummy lights came on also for just a sec. I tried putting it back in cruise and it did the same thing right away. Now that its home it hasn't done it again, but I bet if I drive it for some distance it will. Any ideas? If anyone could help that would be great! </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

That sounds like the EBPV connector (Exhaust Back Pressure Valve). You can unplug that one for now, but I'd be wanting to know why everything was unplugged!

BTW, the EBPV is in the turbo outlet -- it closes to help with warm up, but only when it's cold out (like in 30-40 degree range). It shouldn't be closing on you in the summer.

If it's closing when you plug it in,its probably the EBPV solinoid. From the stealership its like $298.,your best bet is either gut the pedistal or get someone who has replaced their turbo pedistal with one that doesnt have an EBPV and se if you can get the solinoid from them.

Basically I have to pull the turbo off to get to the base? Or is it just the sensor that needs to be removed I didn't look at it all that close. I am not sure, this is my first deisel, still getting used to it. Seems like alot of electrical gremlins but no dummy lights are comming on. Thanks for were I can get one appreciate it. ill look around before I buy new but probably should since I don't want to replace it again.

I've never pulled the EBPV solenoid, so I can't answer your question. I *have* however gutted my stock pedestal & outlet -- it's pretty easy, and worth it. You might look into combining a bunch of maintenance/mods and pull the turbo once to do it all. You have an opportunity to do some handy stuff with the turbo off. Let us know if you're game!

I'd be leary of plugging anything in that has been unplugged. There may have been some modification done that is the reason behind something being unplugged. For instance, the plug on the turbo pedestal would be unplugged if the pedestal has already been gutted and plugged. Unplugging the connector would keep oil from dumping into a part that is no longer there. (It's summer time so No, you didn't hurt anything by plugging it back in if that's the reason it's unplugged).

If you will describe to us anything you find, and let us know if there have been any modifications over stock installed in the truck, we'll help you work through this. A couple of pictures under the hood might help too.

Since he noticed performance issues after, I'm guessing the EBPV is closing when plugged in. Not sure why that would happen though...

I agree, I was just trying to give examples of why not to start randomly plugging things in until we figured out what was going on.

Okay I got a couple pictures hopefully this will help. I only know of a couple mods. That the tranny its got a billet aluminum torque converter, which in this case is another story, the exhaust is straight piped right to the turbo, I know alot of people do that mod. But with it unplugged it runs fine so far. Like I said I replaced the cam sensor in the front. I also checked with ford to see if it had all the recalls done and they said it was good to go. Wow is it dirty in there!

Yes, that's the EBPV solenoid connector. It's not a sensor. Is the plug for it the one laying in the puddle of oil in the pic? Did you clean out the contacts before you plugged it in?

Simple green and a garden hose. That will clean that motor up. I also use a tooth brush to get into the tight spots and for the built-up areas also.
