I have a 2001 Ford F150 7700 payload truck and to my surprise there is no tachometer in the instrument cluster. I rely upon the tachometer to check various things such as the transmission slipping or other automotive problems. My question is this:
Is it possible to exchange the instrument cluster in a 2001 F150 for one that has a tachometer included in the cluster? Is the truck pre-wired for this option?
I would like to get an instrument cluster with a tachometer included from the salvage yard and install it verses purchasing an after market tachometer that has to be bolted somewhere on the dash.
If your truck is equipped with PATS, any cluster exchange will have to be performed by a dealer because the PATS system incorporates the cluster. The dealer tech would have to reprogram the replacement cluster so it would operate properly with the rest of the system.
FWIW, it would probably be cheaper to install a ScanGauge II since RPM data is sent to the cluster by the PCM.
You can also put your cluster into HEC Dealer Test Mode and display the tach data on the digital odometer.
