I've got to replace the water pump on my '91 4.9. But the big nut will not budge. I've tried spraying penetrating oil there along with heat. I've got a tool that you use with an air hammer and still no go. Which way is the removal direction?
It SHOULD be counterclockwise to remove...unless there's something on your fan shroud that says "left hand thread". When I changed my water pump a few years ago, I ended up removing the fan AND pump (which, if I recall, wasn't a lot of fun), ground two flats 180º apart on the impeller shaft, and stuck the whole unit in a vise. I still had to really reef on the fan nut to get it loose.
If I remember, the shroud says "Right hand thread", assuming thats the correct shroud. Also looking at the motor from the front the fan spins counter clockwise, do I remove the nut the same way? Or does it go the other way?
If your shroud says "right hand thread" then yeah, turn the nut counterclockwise to remove the fan. Without going out and looking at my truck right now, I THINK that if you can find a suitable tool (something like a fairly short pry bar) to put between two of the bolt heads on the fan pulley, you might be able to use that as a lever to stop the pulley from spinning when you try to turn the fan nut. It's tight in there, though...so patience is the key! I changed my fan clutch last year (did the water pump in '03) and that's the trick I used.
From a trivia standpoint, I've read here on the boards that Ford didn't really have a set pattern on whether they used right- or left-hand threads on the fan nut...seemed totally random.
A little late maybe for my input, but I just replaced my '92's clutch fan with OE Motorcraft, and it also says "TIGHTEN--->" clockwise. To remove would be counter-clockwise. I simply rented the tool from parts store for the clutch fan. It made it a lot easier once you get the hang of working it.
Can some one do me a small favor and see which way the fan(pulley) is spinning when the engine is running. Looking from the front. Mine spins to the left (Counter Clockwise). So the big nut should loosen to the right, correct?
I finally got the fan clutch off. It was a standard rotation (Lefty loosy righty tighty). Dealer ships computers didn't go that far back and wouldn't even look in the books. But its finally off. Thanks for everybodies help.
