Yeah, she was 11 years old. Someone grabbed her from the front yard, and the step-father jumped on a bicycle and tried to follow the van. He was the only one who saw the abduction, and of course he has been the primary suspect for 18 years. But they could not prove the case. It destroyed his life and their marriage.
The perp had kept her in his back yard for all this time, and fathered two children with her. He was already a convicted rapist. He took the kids with him to hand out religious leaflets, and somehow the cops got suspicious about a guy on the sex offender list having children with him. He confessed, and told the cops how he had found God. But now of course he has lawyered up and pled NG yesterday.
There was a string of prostitute murders in the area where he worked around the same time period, and they are trying to connect him with those. His yard is about an acre, so I'm sure they will be looking for graves.
That little girl, Jaycee Lee DuGard was snatched from a neighborhood on the Calif side of Lake Tahoe. It dominated the news here for months. Her step father was a wall paper hanger. I hired him for a small job about a year after the girl disappeared. You could see that he was emotionally ruined from living under the cloud of suspicion for all that time. His wife finally divorced him. I can't imagine how he must feel now. Or the mother for that matter.

John and Ken (local radio) talked to the step-father last night. I only heard a bit of it. But I felt for the guy. He feels vindicated now, so maybe his lot in life will improve. I hope so.
I haven't heard anything of an interview with the child (now 29 YO?) Will she be happy to have this guy gone? Or will the Stockholm Syndrome have her feeling victimized? She will be a very interesting psychological case. To her children, the guy was just Dad.
Very similar to the Smart case a few years ago. But this is enhanced by the long time period.
You think so, I think the lady would have talked about being in the park and running around free. These people were kept in cages from what I understand. What a freak but after so long and being the father of her children it probably did become normal.
We went to a '50's diner across the street from the motel. It was pretty good, though certainly "Route 66 touristy", with swing-dancing lessons on a Saturday night. The local kids are quite good at it.
Sonic was too far to walk to, and I didn't want to take the truck, as I already got the prime parking spot in the lot for a trailer-on.

My wife was a Deputy with the Douglas Co NV Sheriff's Dept when that deal happened. Her old partner emailed here I guess as the story broke.
They need to string that guy & his wife up with a rope around their necks.
What I want to know is how could Probation/Parole Officers be doing there job & not find that whole deal. That is what the craziest thing to me is.
I pretty sure I won't lose any money on that deal Steve.
